    North Korea

Given the opportunity would you go?

I'm torn. On the one hand, I love experiencing new countries and immersing myself in the local culture so would love to go, but morally I'd find it difficult to go there if the horror stories about the regime and prison camps are true. I don't believe everything I read about DPRK in the media as it is heavily biased, but I don't doubt there's some truth to the rumours. So yes, I would feel uneasy from that point of view.

I know a fella that has been and who thoroughly enjoyed it and it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity and such a different experience, so I think I'd go. (Though I'd obviously be extremely limited in my movements). Would you?

P.S Has anyone been, in fact?

I think it would be really interesting but I doubt you'd get to see the whole picture.

Closest I've been to this type of society was a day in East Berlin!!

    I'd love to go.

Not for me. 'A cheap holiday in other people's misery' comes to mind - thought maybe not that cheap. For me it's akin to visting nazi Germany or the ussr - i wouldn't be giving them my money or letting them show me their Potemkin villages

They had repaired very little of the war damage - there were bullet holes everywhere. You have to change 8 into East German marks. Their coins were made of aluminium so felt like toy money. You weren't allowed to take any of their money back but couldn't find anything to spend it on. There was a 3 month waiting list for a restaurant seat. Most of the cars were the same. The people seemed resentful of us (although I was told if you went further out they were very warm and keen for you to spend your cash with them).

The east had some of the best bits of old Berlin and the museums were excellent.

The wall looked small and triffling from the west side but very scarey from the eastern side.

    I must go back sometime.
