    Tattoos

Tattoos are something can be so utterly $#@!e, crass and tacky. But done right, I reckon they look the bidniz.

I have three although two are incorporated into the same design. I thought long and hard about them, there are no words, just nice designs. One I designed myself and the other two (the combined design) were two designs that just jumped out at me, one from an old book and one sent to me by a friend on a card. I regret none and still love them (got them in 1995).

Recently, I've been thinking of getting two new tattoos. Now, it's a subject that can go so completely wrong / $#@!e that I'm thinking feckin' hard about it and may not bother at all...

    My kids.

I have an idea for my daughter, she was easy as her name is Rose. I love the idea of a really intricate artful rose tattoo, probably on my shoulder.

But, my son? Cannot for the life of me think of something that would represent him. It's almost making me think of getting text, which is something I have always thought is a MASSIVE mistake. But, I reckon I can be pretty confident his name will never change.

    Thoughts?

It may help your quest if you let the brothers and sisters know what your son is called

Well, I didnae think that was relevant as I'm not really wanting to go for text.

    His name is Farquhar-Worthington-Tree-Surgeon-McBiscuit-Barrel.

    David for short.

I was thinking more for ideas as to what would represent his name "A Rose for a Rose" type scenario. All you need is a tattoo of a slingshot.

Is David related to the Ftang ftang ole biscuit-barrel family? It's an unusual surname

That's actually a great idea. We have this book that he loved when he was wee called Goliath & Wee Davie, it was the story of a wee Scottish boy who moved with his family from Saltcoats to Jericho and ended up having to fight Goliath on behalf of of the Jews. Very funny story.

He is indeed related to the Barrell, but only as an elaborate tax dodge.

I've got a tattoo for my laddie. Know you don't want text but I got a line from a song I used to always sing to him as a baba and would always without fail calm him. Luckilly he prefered Oasis to nursery rhymes so got 'You and I are going to Live Forever' with his date of birth in roman numerals underneath.

As long as you get something that you like and stay away from a portrait of him you'll be alright.

Pity it's not the young lad Euphonium.

Can't remember the trumpet that named him, but he's probably band from tattoo design.

I've been 'supposed' to get a tat each for my boys since they were born (nearly 5 years ago), a combo of not being quite sure what to get and not knowing a really good artist has thus far allowed me to procrastinate. I have pretty much decided to get a bird or animal depicted on the inside of each forearm - current options are terns, salmon, swallows and others that undertake long journeys - hopefully representing our closeness for life? maybe sounds daft to some but it doesn't really matter if its personal to you.....appreciate swallows are very cliched but love the colours....

let me know if you find or know of a proper artist in Embra please?

If you're looking for photo realistic swallows i'd reccomend 'rock n roll' tattoo in Abbeyhill. Quality Polish artists but pricey.

If its a vintage swallow design go for Love/Hate in the Southside, they specialise in retro designs. Also regularly have guest artists from Miami and New York Ink have over but presume youve got to book well in advance for them.

Always liked the thought of a tattoo but not unless it meant something to me. When my Daughter was born last year i designed one that is text and i love it. It may not be to everyone's taste, I've attached a couple of pics.

I agree that text names can look terrible, hopefully you won't think it of mine.

Designed myself so that it is unique.

The only thing i was unhappy with on mine was the date of birth inside the n. I prefer 1's to be written like "|" but they just done it their own way. Small flaw i can live with.

I've got text on my right forearm; it's the final two lines from the poem Invictus and I wanted it to have an ambigram look / feel to it.

One line reads 'I am the master of my fate' left to right from my wrist to my inner elbow while the second reads 'I am the Captain of my soul' upside down and right to left from my inner elbow towards my wrist? Make sense? Hope so!

The $#@! about it is that a film of the same name came out shortly after I had it done. $#@!ing Matt Damon and voice actor Morgan Freeman. I make sure when anyone asks that I first heard of the poem when Timothy McVeigh (The Oklahoma Bomber) was executed. The effect of my attempted mind $#@! is usually lost as they dinnae ken who the **** is.

I never got it because I share any sort of affinity with him, I just like the sentiment(s) of the poem. Choices, decisions, your future - I'm in charge. Nobody else.

My screen resolution must be a bit dodgy.

It looks like you have WANK tattooed on your right arm.

Did you really need to be reminded which one to use?

I've got a tattoo for my laddie. Know you don't want text but I got a line from a song I used to always sing to him as a baba and would always without fail calm him. Luckilly he prefered Oasis to nursery rhymes so got 'You and I are going to Live Forever' with his date of birth in roman numerals underneath.

As long as you get something that you like and stay away from a portrait of him you'll be alright.
I'm not into these things generally, but if you'll pardon the girly way of putting it, that's quite sweet actually.

Morag Sangster at Tribe is top class. Just search for her; Morag tattoo Edinburgh, my tats were done by one of her protgs.
Morag did all of my ones including this Aztec Calender on me back. Still inky and as yet not cleaned up, as it was completed at a tattoo convention in Liverpool several years ago. Anyone with tats who when asked 'does it hurt' and says no is a $#@!ing liar.

That's an amazing design, looks quality. There's something about the Aztec calender that is just beautiful, and mysterious. I had my eye on a Mexican Aztec coin for a long time, and couldn't resist finally buying one earlier this year. Usually I don't pay high premiums, but this was one I had to have. Just a fantastic design, cheaper, and a lot more painless than yours.

    Thoughts?
You would think so but canny be sure - my brother changed his first name when he was 21! Maybe getting a great tattoo linked to their names would stop Rose or David from ever doing this?

I've no tattoos - I think it is just the permanent image that bothers me - seen plenty tattoos over the years that are very impressive and lately I've been quite hypnotised but some of those ones that pretty much cover the whole arm in a swirl of images, but I canny help think I'd want to change the design after a year or two. I used to think they were naff and inappropriate for lots of events / jobs / places but nowadays they are so ubiquitous that this is no longer the case.

That is so intricate, brilliant work by the artist.

And +1 to the bullshitters that claim it's pain free.

Surely it depends where you get the tattoo. I've got a tiny one on my ankle and it didn't hurt at all.

Quality. Uber frustrating. I have an even better 'text' tattoo mind $#@!; My mate was shall we say tripping and decided to get a really profound tattoo as a kinda '$#@! You' to the world and all the ****s and $#@!e $#@! he'd been through. So, he goes in and gets it tattooed on his leg.

    "It's My Life"

About 3 months later the tampon adverts with the rollerblading bird started up with "It's My life" playing as the soundtrack.

    That is truly excellent.

I love that kind of art. Of the two tattoos in one that I have on my upper right arm; the first is a design that was carved into a stone that was dug up in Cornwall but carbon dated/located? to Scotland i.e. it had been done up here and transported down there in the Pictish/Celtic times. It actually looks kinda Native American, the second design, I was told by my pal that sent it to me was an 11 month Incan calendar. I, however, went to Peru and coincidentally met some Peruvian student archaeologists and they told me is was pre-Incan Peruvian. Still don't know much about it. Will whap a picture up when I get a chance.

I worked with him for a few years at Northern Steeplejacks. The first job I was on with him was in Stevenston Ayrshire and after a hard days graft up the spire he thought it would be funny to tie my rope off at the bottom so I was left stuck a couple o' hunner feet up, in me boson's chair while they $#@!ed off to the pub.

Test the new guy oot and aw that

I'm no missing a swally so I just slid down the rope. I was bricking it likes, as it was the first time I'd done that but I wisnae letting them beat me, and walked in the boozer gallus as $#@!. Earned a bit o' respect for it and we all proceeded to get funkin steamboats. But Scotty kept needling me throughout the sesh, so much so, that I started getting a bit personal about him. Man! He didnae like that. It ended up in a square-go in the town shopping precinct. $#@! me! It was my first day working with this radge and we're rolling about in the puddles!!

The next morning on the job Scotty says to me "How $#@!in hard is your heid ma $#@!in hand is sair as $#@!...I think I need to go to the hospital" So off he goes and comes back a few hours later with a stookie on. He had broken his wrist. "HA! Ya Funkin POOF!!" I shouts to him from a safe distance. He had to go back to Nitten and work on the $#@!ey jobs in the yard.

We became very good pals after all that.

    Crazy days.

Sorry for the hijack folks. I'm just killing time till I go out on peev. Which is now
