Don't stay at the New Yorker hotel for starters although its got a great position.

Its well worth, in my opinion, getting a bus pass with entry to attractions - someone will be along to give them their proper name :-)

They'll take you everywhere you'll want to go to. Go to Trip advisor and do a general attractions search, you'll be amazed at all the things you know about but forgot/didn't know they were there.

There's the obvious Empire State Building - make sure you go to the top.

9/11 Memorial I wasn't sure about but went and still not sure about it, maybe its still too recent, I felt it was too full of goppers for a Memorial and the folk trying to flog stuff there I thought was a bit sick.

Broadway. Make sure you go to the right end!!!!

Beer is $8 or so for three quarters of a pint in average bars.

Its illegal to smoke in public parks, although in one the NYPD turn a blind eye to 'happy' smoking.

Do neck muscle exercises before you get there. You'll spend most of your time looking up!

Unlike SF the streets are relatively safe, no bush man lol

I created a $#@!tail tour of the East Village which was utterly bangin. Will post it if you're interested. Loads of cool $#@! in NYC.

Randomly, on a Yank tip; I've heard great things about Philadelphia. In fact everywhere other than NYC, which is essentially the London of the US. But, then I like London too.

Brooklyn is great, wish I'd spent more time there, only there for a day.

What kinda stuff are you wanting to do?

Visited New York many years ago (1991 to be exact) on a 2 day stopover so I had to cram as many touristy things in that I could in a short space of time. I would recommend the Circle Line boat tour which goes round Manhattan Island. It takes about 3 hours and includes great views of the city and the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I'm sure they still do it. Make sure you take a walk down 5th Avenue and visit Trump Tower and of course you have to go to the top of the Empire State.

Great city and one I would love to visit again sometime.

A seriously good town much underused by tourist from The UK, I'd recommend a wee twin centre, NYC & DC using the train, plus the train station in DC is feckin amazing.

They do.I usually suggest people do the half island tour, as once your up past The UN building you've probably seen what you want to...it then turns back and goes back to port.A highly worthwhile excursion, though.

Also, United have announced they're flying Edinburgh-Chicago from next May, that's another town worth a visit...and good to tie in with a multi centre Vegas/San Fran trip-NYC on the way out, Chicago on the way back!

Might look into DC for a summer trip. Wouldn't do a twin town trip with NYC though, been there, didn't like it.

When I was there in April we went to see a Broadway show, The Jersey Boys. Of course its about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons who were from Jersey just down the road from NY. I think it made it a wee bit special seeing a 'local' show. And it was damned good, saying that as someone who is neither fussy on theatre and particularly musicals.

So I've now decided to go and see Chicago in Chicago, the Miserables in Paris, Miss Siagon etc. etc.

We were in NY in December Jack, our hotel was right off Broadway. The Beacon Theatre was 2 or 3 blocks away and who should be in concert the days we were there? Billy Connolly!
We didnae go because the cheapest tickets were $140.

My son got married in Las Vegas last year.
We had the Wedding dinner in the Venetian, and afterwards when we left the private room and came downstairs all kilted up the whole restaurant stood and applauded. The Yanks are brilliant at stuff like that.

My younger son and his mate remained kilted up for most of their stay in Vegas and er....... were suitably rewarded by the local ladies.

I think we got our tickets for about that between us direct from the theatre the afternoon before the performance. We could have maybe got them from a half price ticket booth but that would have meant queuing for ages with no guarantee.

We were there for 2 full days and decent hours on the days on either end. We just scratched the surface and canny wait to get back.

    @Naked Chef

It's hard to explain but I think a number of factors made it not that great for me. It was the last 5 days of a mentally busy 3 week holiday to the States, the hotel room we stayed in was miniscule compared to size of the rooms we'd previously stayed in and I found most New Yorkers to be rather abrupt and well, $#@!s. Much preferred the West Coast. I'm not saying I wouldn't go back, although it would probably only be for a shopping trip.

Also the person I was with wasn't the greatest company.

Alcatraz is a superb tour - although it's eerie enough during the day.

I guess it depends on the individual though - I 'felt' the atmosphere there keenly as did Mrs Shrink, but when a work colleague returned from visiting Alcatraz and I asked "Alcatraz is really atmospheric eh?" I got "Was it? Thought it was a bit boring. Alright I suppose."
