One for the Bounce D J's

Was listening to the radio last couple of days in the car and a song came on, cannae mind what, but the guy said it doesn't get released until sometime in September but is available for pre download on iTunes. What's that all about? Why are songs given air time but not released for such a long time?
I remember (just) when I was interested in the charts that you wouldn't hear a song until it was released, normally on a Monday, so it would chart in the following Sunday's charts.

DJs get sent promo's of tunes before they get released to the general public. It's all about creating a buzz for a tune, with the thinking being it will then sell well when released. A recent example being the Daft Punk tune that was played all over the place before release.

Theres always been pre-release playing of music. Eg when I worked in virgin records I can remember having a 12" promo of fairytale of new York a few weeks before its first release and playing it a few times a day. Its done to get interest up in a song prior to release.

Some DJ's/Stations also get a "gift" to play certain records or get them on a playlist. Gets on rotation, becomes familiar to the listener, listener wants to buy it.
