Pilrig amigo re Circe's Island, absolutely brilliant. I bought The Odyssey in 1976/7. Bedford's classical orchestral genius is astonishing. Died in 2011 RIP.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bedford

I first got to know him when he did orchestration on Kevin Ayers wonderful WHATEVERSHEBRINGSWESING album, along with Mike Oldfield and Robert Wyatt amongst others.

He also appeared bizarrely on crutches after breaking a leg, playing the accordion, with Mike and Kevin in one of my all time favorites which I have fired on this thread before......$#@! it why not, from 1972....beautiful.

Everyone's words of support are helping me thru this. I appreciate every comment, prayer and positive thought.

Guys and girls I can't emphasise how much your words are encouraging and helping me. This battle has barely started but I know you'll be by my side every step of the way - it's giving me great strength - Shaun 16/03/2016

David Bedford also did orchestration for Mike Oldfield on, I think, Hergest Ridge. I'm slowly discovering Bedford's other works via youtube. I bought The Odyssey when it was released, what attracted me to it was a) his work with Oldfield (and also being on the Virgin label) b) my life-long interest in Greek mythology, I knew more about Odysseus & co when I was a kid than I knew about Batman, Superman etc.
This was in the glory days (imho) of Virgin Records, whatever we think of Branson nowadays we should thank him for setting up that label. Oldfield, Bedford, Tangerine Dream, Egg and so on, for a brief few years it was the home for truly avant-garde rock. And of course backed the Sex Pistols at the height of their notoriety when other labels bottled oot of having them.

First track on that album exemplifies this amigo. I was 17 when I bought that album in 1971. As Sandy Denny said 'Who knows where the time goes.'

What a great song, what a lineup, Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, Peter Bardens, Beryl Marsden and Rod Stewart, 1966. Brilliant.

I first got to know him when he did orchestration on Kevin Ayers wonderful WHATEVERSHEBRINGSWESING album, along with Mike Oldfield and Robert Wyatt amongst others.

First track on that album exemplifies this amigo. I was 17 when I bought that album in 1971. As Sandy Denny said 'Who knows where the time goes.'

    RIP KEVIN AYERS

Just heard of this tonight whilst listening to the 'The Last Word' obituary programme on Radio 4 which was recorded earlier today. Kevin is a bit of an all time favorite of mines. Bought my first album of his when I was 16 and that was it. I saw him on several occasions in the 70's however the last time I saw him, backed by an excellent Belgian combo The Starvin' Marvins, was at the Boardwalk in Sheffield in 2002 and had a bevvy and good blether with him after the gig.

    RIP amigo.

Guys and girls I can't emphasise how much your words are encouraging and helping me. This battle has barely started but I know you'll be by my side every step of the way - it's giving me great strength - Shaun 16/03/2016

Lost another one. Those of us who were adolescents and growing up during the time of Kevin Ayers and the Soft Machine, I for one am grateful for the music then created.

Great cover of Tim Buckley's tune by the fantastic Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins fame

The Jam covered this original on their live album - Dig The New Breed.

Watched an episode of Simon Schama's A History of Britain this morning. This episode was about Elizabeth I of England, and inevitably her ill-starred cousin (once removed), Mary, Queen of Scots. This piece is an arrangement by John Harle of the old English folk song Three Ravens (featuring Sarah Leonard - soprano). It was played during the scenes of Mary's trial and execution, certainly potent music which tugged the emotions.
