Good question

Last season at U12s sides were able to opt for what League they played in. There were nearly 20 teams in Div One (not quite but not far off it ).

Some teams clearly called it very wrong and there were some horrendous scorelines in certain games. As a consequence some have this season opted (rightly) for a lower division. However, there were still 14 teams left wanting first division status (and I still think some should have also moved down a league for their own sakes, but there you go). In addition, two teams wanted up into Div One - Dalkeith and Newcraighall. This meant 16 sides all wanting top division status.

This included TWO Hutchie teams and TWO Salvy teams.

The league have addressed this by creating two sections to the division - a and b. ie Section 1A isnt the top league and vice versa. They were pretty much drawn out of a hat. Personally, and its just mho, section B has a greater number of good sides and - arguably - two or three of the very best sides. Section A has both the sides who were previously in Div 2 and a couple of sides who have taken some heavy defeats last season and look very vulnerable full stop.

As far as we understand it. There will be a winner of Sect A and a winner of Sect B. They will then have a play off to decide the winners of the U13s. I assume something similar will happen at the other end of the tables.

There are so many cup competitions at U13 level (that effectively kick in from this weekend) that there will undoubtedly be a big backlog for the better sides come April/May. The weather of late has not helped matters either

Currently there are only three sides left with a 100% record - Hutchie in Div 1a and by all accounts they sound a decent outfit. Edina Hibs and Leith in Div 1b.

It is the same in the 2nd Div too.

Seems there were requests from some clubs to simply ask Hutchie and Salvesen to only have one side in Div One, the same as any other club, but this was rejected Had that been the case then the league may have been manageable in a traditional form. Sadly, now, my laddies team will only be guaranteed playing 7 of the other division one sides and a possible 8 - but only if they win Div 1b. Dont think that is healthy.

That's the biggest thing to me. Its too boring if you get too used to playing individual sides, when their could be a league of 14, which if all teams in the league were of a decent standard, would provide an exciting and hopefully closely challenged league.
