Limerick
I've got cheapish flights to Shannon in September. Booked a hotel in Limerick for 2 nights (fri+sat) but since have came across a few horror stories. Is it really that bad? Should I consider going elsewhere?
Cheers in advance Lisa |

But yer far better off nipping up the road to Galway which is only an hour or so from Shannon - quality party town, much better for a night out than limerick and less paggers - ive never had a bad night there. Also close to Connemarra and The Burren if yer up for sightseeing. It would be a waste to go to that part of the country and not spend a night or two in Galway. |

Had originally planned to go to Galway but hotel prices are almost 1/2 the price in Limerick (I now realise why). Just wanted a wee cheap weekend away as I'm off to Madrid the week after. Will def get to Galway at some point. For a longer break though. Thanks again |

Re: Limerick
I actually really like Limerick. You shouldn't really encounter any problems when you're there. Just get the Guinness down ye and enjoy the craic!
The bad press is really down to organised crime in a particular outlying area of the city. Shouldn't affect you... |

Re: Limerick
Spent a night in Limerick at Easter, and agree with Superbam that Galway is a far better place for a night out. But we had no bother at all in Limerick, friendlier people are difficult to meet. We spent ages looking for a bar, but then found loads all in the same location.
If you have any access to transport while there, It's just a short drive to Ballingarry, the home of Cannon Hannon! It was one of the highlight's of our trip. As Dosman say's "get the Guinness down ye and enjoy the craic!" ![]() |

Re: Limerick
My girlfriend is from Limerick County, so i've been out in Limerick a few times and never had any bother (other than the bother I tried to cause).
If anyone tries to get you to go drinking in Moyross though, no no no no

Re: Limerick
Just don't be telling them how much you love Dublin and its people when you get there. They don't like us very much

Re: Limerick
Lisa you will be fine in Limerick as has been said certain estates and areas are no go but you wont be anywhere near them, also some good bars there and rugby is the big game for many as will be seen when Munster play the Heineken Cup Final on Saturday.

Re: Limerick
A crowd of us went over to Galway to see the Proclaimers in November last year and stayed three nights.
Galway is a smashing wee place with a lively nightlife. The Front Door, Quays (live band) and Busker Browns are the names of the pubs I remember being in. The Thursday night was student night and the pubs all started off busy and got well busier! There were a few folk that we talked to over there who were from Limerick and were up for the weekend who told us that we could do worse than head to Limerick for a weekend next time. The reputation seems to be centred in specific areas as mentioned by others. There is a great sit in fish'n'chip shop down and opposite from the Quays which is great, especially if you fancy trying catfish. Let us know what you think of the place when you get back. fj PS - If you do go to the Quays and bring back my short sandy coloured jacket I will buy you a few beers for yer trouble ![]()

Re: Limerick
Limerick, like most major cities in Ireland and Britain has some really dodgy areas and the troubles in these estates has given 'Stab-City' it's bad reputation.
Fear not! My bro-in-law lives down there and I've spent many a weekend there without seeing so much as a cigarette thrown away in anger. The city centre is buzzing with plenty of shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs. Added to that, you've got the likes of St Johns Castle and Bunratty castle nearby if you wanna stay out of the pubs for a few hours. Relax, it'll be grand... |

Re: Limerick
If the going gets tough, you can take refuge with these chaps.....
Moyross monks have faith rewarded THE Franciscan Friars of the Renewal based in Delmege Park, Moyross, have been awarded the Limerick Person of the Month award for their efforts in bringing a new sense of hope to the people of the area. "I've never received an award before," said Br Shawn O'Connor, on receiving the award at the Clarion Hotel in the company of Fr Paulus. "It's a nice honour, very unexpected. We are only here three months and already we are getting an award,". Known for their work in tough urban areas of New York, London, Honduras and Albuquerque, the friars moved into the Limerick housing estate last July. Since then–the five, Br Shawn, Fr Sylvester and Br Martin from America; Fr Paulus from Germany, and Br Seraphim from France–have fostered a deeper spiritual renewal among the residents. On a daily basis they can be seen walking through the estate's green areas and going about their daily business. And the reaction from the locals? Br Shawn is pleased to report that it has been largely positive. "It's unbelievable. The amount of people who honk their horns and wave at us. You get the occasional sarcastic comment, but most of it is positive, it seems to me. And the kids, well, the kids are great. We have a brother who does religious rap and he has all the kids going crazy for it. He makes little rosary beads as well," continued Br Shawn, head of the St Patrick's Friary based at 62-64, Delmege Park.
