Friendly Match Against Cliftonvile In Belfast

Spoke to a cliftonville supporter on saturday and he has instructed me that the match with us is on the 16th June. I will phone cliftonville fc to confirm. We should also post a thread in all bounce forums to instruct supporters to meet at the famous oak bar once confirmed.

Seems very soon for no official confirmation to come from Easter Road - let us know what the club says in Belfast.

We can let everyone know about the famous and lukcy Oak bar and we can get leaflets done at the last minute as well.

Do you agree that Cliftonville was/is a good choice? Prefer Derry City, Newry Town or Drogheda, personally. But then, it's only an opinion.

Its Cliftonville's 125th anniversary this year. I assume that'd be the reason its the Reds instead of one of those trophyless clubs.

My gut reaction is that I would have prefered it to be Derry City or certainly not one of the Belfast clubs.

But as I say it seems a bit late for the clubs to announce it now if they are aiming for a date so soon.

(Fizzure - by the way, I need you to add you comment to the threads from the meeting you haven't already added to. There's a list of them in the thread marked 'comments needed').

Is this the same Cliftonville who won the Irish Premiership, only to get relegated, and I take it, won it this season to come back?

Actually, that resembles a certain Green and White team I know who nearly did the same thing.

No offence, tho. Cliftonville is a rough place. I've got cousins there.

Re: Friendly Match Against Cliftonvile In Belfast

Nope never relegated. Won the league in 98, had a few relegation play-off scraps (one this season in fact) but won the CIS Cup this season.

And the Cliftonville area is grand. Sure I live there

Well, that's the thing. Sky News has never shown them in the Premier league all season, so I assumed they got relegated. I hadn't felt compelled to follow it up by asking my fellow Irishmen, cos I couldn't care less. 8)

I used to remember Hibs playing Pre-season games with teams from the top division in England (be it the old Div 1 or the current Premiership), so you can see my apprehension at playing a team comprised of postmen, milkmen, mechanics and civil servants.

With all due respect to Cliftonville, of course.

Sky Sports have seemingly decided that the bottom half of the table isn't important enough to show. Its a 16 team league this year. They only show the top 10/12

Well then that's ok then. I offer my entire apologies to all Cliftonville fans who visit, or know Fizzure.

The only time I ever got to know anything about N.Irish football was when I used to work with a guy who supported Glenavon. He followed them through thick and thin, and attended the majority of games. His British team was Coventry (he didn't support anyone from Scotland), which I let him, because my Dad supports Coventry City too.

What's Cliftonville's nickname?

I need to know this.

Can't say for sure Scoobs as I'm told that Cliftonville supporters have also been unable to get absolute confirmation from either club.

We'll have to wait on confirmation from ER which, hopefully, will come soon.

Who you calling Trophyless....

Even when the DCFC fought relegation we still won trophy's.......
And there's another thing their seems to be more cup competitions in the Irish League than in four other leagues put together.......

Trophyless and we'd whip the Ville reds any time Ohh we've already done that

We even had a victory tonite Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Re: Friendly Match Against Cliftonvile In Belfast

We were only at the Brandywell for our money :P

Oh and there's only 3 cup competitions in the Irish League, same as the eircom

And as far as I know, the match will NOT be on June 16th. The pitch last season was shocking and its being done up over the summer, and I don't think it will be ready in time for 4 days time. Plus there has been nothing said by the club. If a club the size of Hibernian were playing at Solitude, we'd know about it, trust me.

My thoughts exactly Fizzy mate - we would have had to have official confirmation before any friendly could be played.

But, in the long run, there's no smoke without fire and Hibs have been talking about playing in Ireland for ages - I reckon it'll happen soon enough as there's money to be made here.

Re: Friendly Match Against Cliftonvile In Belfast

Right, there was a Q&A session with the new Cliftonville manager in the CSC tonight, and apparently (I didn't go, I showed up outside the bar before the England v Suisse match and it was shut, so I fecked off somewhere else to another pub and couldn't be arsed going back later) he mentioned the Home match with Hibs. No confirmed date, but apparently the clubs are in talks, at least.

I'll let youse know if there are anymore details

Great stuff Fizzy - it would be a match for us to really look forward to and we would be able to get loads of supporters' club leaflets out.

Just back from a week in Ireland (in which we took part in the sights of Antrim, Down, Louth, Meath, Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare). Just the usual run in the car.

Bought a Down GAA shirt for the first time to show off in Dundee (the Hibs shirts are for showing off too, but especially in Ireland - the looks I got). But promptly remembered to take it off before getting to Larne. Bridie wondered why I was stopping so suddenly, 'I can't feckin wear this near Larne, I'll get linched' and promptly replaced it with a resonable wearing outfit, but then I remembered.....I drove down the Ravenhill Road, on the way to the Motorway, with it on.

DOH!

Back home, and looking forward to coming back again. Hence me making this post on this thread. I'm still up for this, especially as I found a new job already (don't ring people on their mobys when they're down south - INTERNATIONAL RATES! Blimey!) Starting this Monday.

Let me know the full gossip relating to this, as I DON'T want to come back over for some meaningless games for Dundee FC, and have them lot staying at me Ma n' Da's house.

Glad to be back, but missing Ireland already.

Sláinte,
Mark.

Re: Friendly Match Against Cliftonvile In Belfast

I have an old 1980s Hibs top (white with the 'crown' badge in the middle) and Umbro on each sleeve - people used to stop me in the street in Leith to ask me about it!

Sounds like you had a class time when you came across Scoobs - but remember to give me a shout next time you are over and have time as myself and the Trouble and Strife would be pleased to welcome you/your T&S to cultural North Antrim as our guests.

And as for Larne ......... criminals to a man, as long as you were there during the day you would have been fine as everyone would have sleeping, although they get up early on Sundays at 6pm to nick car stereos from evening service church-goers!

So what's the new job? Trendy design firm or publishingy side of things? I bet they've got an 'ultra-cool' name like OvalSquared or something!

We're all keeping a close eye on any possible friendly being played by Hibs over here and we'll keep you up to date - it should be worth it as I reckon it could be a contender for the greatest NI Hibs drinking session of all time if it happens!

Glad you enjoyed your trip back home - haste ye back, as the man says.
