Dundee United's visit to Easter Road this weekend is no ordinary run-of-the-mill SPL encounter for one group of Hibs fans. Most Hibbies take it for granted that a trip to Easter Road to see their heroes is a case of jumping in the car or bus for a 20 minute trip down to Leith, but imagine if you had to come 300 miles to be part of Tony Mowbrays Green'n'White Army. The Orkney Hibs Supporters Branch are "coming down the road"
Hibs are renouned for having fans scattered all over the globe, and when some of these fans make their journey to 'Mecca', its no ordinary day out. Indeed, The Bounce has many members who live many miles from Easter Road, The Blue Toon guys, Delting from Shetland, to name but a few, who all make as regular a visit to see the Hibees as they can. These guys are the hardiest of football fans as we can imagine. The Orkney Hibees day out started today, and will carry on til' sunday when they return home. They were re-formed last year after a period of inactivity and already have over 50 members, of whom 27, will be at the match. Orkney is some 300 miles from Edinburgh so the journey involves a ferry trip across the Pentland Firth, a long overland drive and 2 nights in Edinburgh. Orkney Hibs are now affiliated to the Hibernian Supporter’s Association and any Hibee with Orkney connections, however slender, who wishes to join, should contact Robert Miller, Orkney Hibs Secretary, at orkneyhibs@aol.com. The organisation of this trip has been aided by a friend of the Orkney Branch, Eric Annal, who is based in Edinburgh. Eric is a life-long Hibby and also a member of the SUABC group, although, by his own confession, he regards himself as a 'Glory Hunter' having been 'hooked' on Hibs since the heady days of Smith, Johnston, Reilly, Turnbull and Ormond and all the trappings that came with that era. All have decided to treat themselves to the Edinburgh Suite in the West Stand and a full programme has been organised. A couple of representatives will be live on Radio Hibs and will then join the full party for a group photograph which will be taken for the Orcadian newspaper. They will chat with the Hibernian Legends in the Edinburgh Suite and hopefully the youngsters in the party will meet some of the team for autographs and photos. The Hibees Bounce wishes to extend its greetings to the Orkney Hibs Supporters Club and, we hope, The Orcadians will bring a bit of good fortune with them that will enable the Hibees to gain the three points required to strengthen their grip on third place in the SPL, and make further advances to ensuring european football comes to Easter Road next season. You never know, a 'kind' euro draw next year and it may be the Orkney Hibs Branch who have the shortest trip to see Hibs in Europe.
