The Green Brotherhood Monday Round Up
The round up returns after a hard fought win for Tony’s Tearaways against the very well organised pub team Inversnecky Caley Thistle in a desolate Pittodrie Saturday.
As ever we start our round up in Holland where close friends FC Groningen dropped to second bottom losing 3-2 at home to NAC Breda, not a good start for the Grunns in their last season at Oosterpark Stadion, with two draws and two defeats giving them only two points from a possible twelve. In Belgium, Cercle Brugge scored a 2-1 home win against GBA keeping them mid table after a couple of good wins. FCG FansSt Etienne drew 1-1 at home to Nantes, with the once great French club finding life in France’s top division very difficult. In Germany Champions Werder Bremen lost again, this time to another green team, Monchengladbach, by three goals to one. The Spanish league has returned with the two green Primera Liga teams taking heavy defeats, Real Betis losing 4-1 at home to Espanyol, whilst Racing Santander lost 3-1 away at Valencian new boys Levante. Over the border in Portugal, Sporting Lisbon also lost, 2-0 at early league leaders Vitoria Setubal. The Americas and in Mexico Santos Laguna lost 1-0 at UAG, whilst farther south in Peru, Deportivo Waanka season has now ended. Latest Green Brotherhood club member, Portland Timbers, lost their final game of the season away to Seattle Sounders by two goals to one. In an interesting, if somewhat dubious link to Hibernian, a Timbers striker, who has scored seventeen goals this season has been loaned out to MSL club Los Angeles Galaxy. So what you say, well indeed, until you hear his name is Alan Gordon!!! Back in Europe and Switzerland where St Gallen remain second bottom, losing 4-1 away to Aarau, whilst in Greece football comes back next week. Hungary and Ferencvaros remain top, although they lost 2-1 away at Kaposvar, the bounce wish them luck in this weeks UEFA Cup tie with Millwall. In Austria, Rapid Vienna stay top with seventeen points after a home win, 2-1 against Admira, whilst in Denmark; Viborg won 2-1 away at Aarhus. In England, ex Hibs Boss Bobby Williamson Plymouth continue their wee run of defeats, this time losing at QPR, by three goals to two, as I said two weeks ago, I take no pleasure in them losing and I hope Boaby returns the Pilgrims to midtable turgidity. :o). Yeovil Town are back in form winning and aiming for a top four spot this season, this time drawing 1-1 at Cheltenham. Ex Hibby’s Clubs Daniel Andersson’s club Helsingborgs managed a 2-2 draw away at AIK, whilst Nicky Colgan’s Barnsley drew 0-0 with Tranmere. Roland Edge’s Hull City continue their fine run beating bottom club Blackpool 2-1. The Non-Greens Turkey and to Fernabahce who continued their winning run with a 4-1 away win at Sepbatspor, keeping them second. In La Liga, both Barca and Real Madrid continue their winning starts, Barca with a comfortable 2-0 home win against a stuffy Sevilla with ex Celt Henrik Larsson spoiling thousands of Celtic fans replica shirts by wearing the number seven top after Saviola left the club, not the seventeen he has been wearing in the pre season friendlies. He scored his first competitive goal for Barca, who look a team who will go far this season. Real Madrid beat newly promoted Numancia 1-0 although once again the Galacticos struggles to take command of the game and were saved a Beckham goal. In Portugal my newly adopted favourite clubs FC Braga and Maritimo prepared for their matches with the homeless and hapless, Braga managing a good 1-1 draw with last years champions Porto, whilst Maritimo beat Penafiel by three goals to nil. Similar results would be very acceptable during the week. Braga Maritimo‘’Sorte boa Braga e Maritimo’’ Down south Everton keep their good run going, winning 1-0 away at a poor looking Man City, whist the Arch Hun himself, ex Hearts Fan and Rangers Player/ Manager Graeme Souness saw his new club Newcastle United hammer his old club Blackburn by three goals to nil. Wish your team could get a mention on the round up? Sent me a private message with you club details and we will, wherever possible, add your club to our summary |
