Edinburgh Schoolboys Select U15 v East and Midlothian Select U15 in the National Cup

Opening tie in Group 2 of the National Regional Cup U15 Select Schoolboys

Edinburgh U15 Select 3 East and Midlothian 0

Excellent win for the Edinburgh side in poor weather conditions at Meggetland tonight. The away side had been installed by some as the pre-tourney favourites given the strength of their squad on paper but the Edinburgh side is also very strong this year and it was always going to be a clash of the titans. Anyone knowing this age group of youth football would immediately recognise the depth of quality on both sides.

The opening period was a fairly well balanced affair with both sides seeing a good share of possession but in the second half Edinburgh's superior strike force and excellent defending made the game a one way contest after the interval.

Two excellent goals from Dean Carse and one from Dale Finnie were more than enough to keep the three points in the capital city and the Edinburgh side ran out worthy and comfortable winners in the end. Credit to their opponents, who did not give up at any point and rallied after every Edinburgh goal but they could not find their way past the dominant Reece Donaldson and Dale Finnie who were outstanding throughout - and even on the occasions they did, the Edinburgh keeper simply pulled off excellent saves to thwart them.

I can see both sides still progressing to the next stage of this competition as East and Midlothian will surely win other games against future opposition - they are still an excellent side.

A full match report will be on Ian Mackay's website and in the Evening News later on this week.

Edinburgh - Chris Binnie (St Thomas'), Jonny Robertson (James Gillespies), Scott Gray (Portobello), Michael Langdale (Forrester), Gareth Rodger (St Augustine's), Sean McAdam (Tynecastle), Lewis Hawkins (Trinity), Jamie Forsyth (Balerno), Reece Donaldson (Holyrood), Declan Fergus (Holyrood), Paul Henderson (Liberton), Dean Carse (Royal High), Dale Finnie (Royal High), Fraser Hunter (Royal High). David Taylor (Forrester),Daniel Shields (Broughton),

Mid and East Lothian- Robert Dickson (Lasswade HS), Nicolas Munro (Lasswade HS), Neil Gibson (Beeslack HS), Chris Jamieson (Musselburgh GS), Callum Gilzean (Newbattle HS), Reece Cochrane (Preston Lodge HS), Taylor McKillop (Preston Lodge HS), Chris Kane (Beeslack HS), Liam Fellenger (Newbattle HS), Ben Miller (Ross HS), Craig Bonar (Newbattle HS), Scott McPherson (Musselburgh GS), Jamie Knox (Lasswade HS), Calum McLure (Ross HS), Ryan Sommerville (Newbattle HS), Johnny Bissett (Knox Acad).Kieran Beveridge (Ross HS),

Also missing our the countless saves pulled off by the Dalkeith keeper.

tbf, we were awful in that league cup final, and because I was playing for my place, I was the only player properly trying in the match v the U15's

Yup, I'm back

I'm sorry Ross but I can't agree with a fair bit of that and it comes over as being somewhat disrespectful to the 14 year old boys you were playing last month - I am sure that is not your intention.

As for the cup final would it be too much to concede that Mr Tomassi got his tactics, formation and team line up spot on? From where most people were watching, that is exactly what happened - your opposition played to their strengths and nullified your sides strength (which is up front) for most of the proceedings.

While you could say the tactics were good, i can honestly say that ours were awful. We had a right back playing CM, and our natural CM on the bench.

Nope, completely not my intention, and I'm sorry for any offence caused.

Ross, the coach - who I am sure you know was involved in running the excellent Leith side at your age group - had done his homework and very much had pinpointed the boys in your team he knew were the better ones. He deliberately moved HIS best players to play out of position against them. That decision was shrewd and proved very important. He also drafted in younger players from the 1994 age group as you know.

Sometimes when things dont go as you anticipate you occasionally have to consider that other people may simply have gotten their game plan right. On that occasion I have no doubt that Mr Tomassi got things absolutely 100% spot on.

Not doubting that. St Tams were extremely well set out, and matched our players. But if you can remember what I said about quitting the team due to the corruption, then it was that final which showed it all. We put the coaches helpers son in the middle of the pitch, and left out a player who had played with hearts only a year before. More influence being shown now, but I've decided to prove why I AM the best of us two.
