as for your "tattie" reference....I'm assuming ignorance....Most Catholic families in Scotland moved here as a result of that Potato Famine....
Is that the case?

I didn't know that.

I'm well aware of the Irish famine and its consequences (I once read "The Demographic Effects of the Potato"..... but I can't seriously recommend it) but I had no idea that the connection between Catholics and Irish in Scotland was quite so strong. What about the Catholics up North for instance - are they all of Irish descent too?

For the avoidance of doubt, anything stated in the above post is written without prejudice; is probably completely uninformed opinion, and possibly just a figment of my imagination. Readers should either ignore, treat with contempt, or simply accept the spirit it is written in, without recourse to huffy replies, legal action or threats of violence.
That includes YOU.

A vast generalisation made by someone who got the 'tim' part wrong. I do hate the tattiedome term though.

Looks guys, I had no intent of still going on about this. But I am genuinely surprised these terms are acceptable on this board. So why have I taken issue?
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Firstly, I am not comfortable with the use of “Tims”. Why wasn’t the term Tic used? Or Bhoys or even Tim Malloys….none on these would have prompted me to write. But instead Tims was used. Now, I am more than aware that there are different tones implied by the word Tims. The Celtic fans do you it. It is used as an affectionate term almost meaning (I guess) the “Celtic Family”. But it is also used by bigoted Rangers fans. Do you think they use the term affectionately? No they don’t. It is meant simply as “catholics” i.e. religious labelling.

I don’t know PS, but reading his responses I don’t get a sense that there was any bigoted intent….and I do accept there is multi uses of the term. But because of more than one meaning, I don’t believe it should be a term that is accepted on this board, as it can be used as a bigoted term.

As for the “tattiedome” related term…even used in humour I find this a deeply offensive term…It refers direct to “Potato Famine”. It is hate term (even if used in jest). And should in no way be acceptable on this board even when used by a popular poster who is no doubt known to many….and the defence of “only catching fish” is not a defence, merely an excuse.

Look, I'm well ware I have become the "thread bore" on this one. Not my intent. My simple points are...why use a term that is open to different meanings....and as for the other term, well, humour isn't a good enough reason for using it......

From you reading you will no doubt know that the catholics up North a) had been there for centuries,b) were increasingly joined by irish catholics as a result of famine and c) had their own famine to contend with in the late 19th century.

Yes indeed to both points.

My secondary point was that despite his attention to detail and worries about who might be offending who - BigWheel seemed to be confusing Catholics with Irish.
Strange one eh?

Tim is allowed on the board because it's generally used in the correct context (Not the Rangers way).

As for your popular poster comment the only person i knew previous to this site was Gunnerhibby (Who i went to games with) i've made many pals here through posting, trips and in the pub so being "Known" isn't an issue and if you read this site regularly you know the type of humour that's used and allowed on it.

I'll just ask you one final question,If we were playing Rangers and i used the term Huns would you be on here complaining so vociferously?
