After last nights drama, could Shiels be our new age Darren Jackson and save us from the drop?

i seem to be in a miniorty at the moment about deano-he's a good player and a good guy but seems to somehow have cult status or even hero worship level amongst hibs supporters

imo he didn't seem to start playing last night until the second half by which point even the most passionate football fan and player had lost interest and a few fancy touches here and there made it look like he had a good game

he'll have to do and he prob will do a job but he'd struggle to get a starting place in a good squad

I agree. I don't think he's a bad player but he, just like the rest, seems to have one good game and 3 bad. The difference is Deano seems to get away with it and the other players get Gyp. I do think he can be a good player for us, BUT and that's a big BUT, there's certain teams I wouldn't play him against, Rangers, Celtic and Hearts, mainly because I think he's a lazy midfielder (not a dig, that's just his game) and we need the midfield in those games to be really tight and together.

Totally agree, he doesn't do it for me and reminds me of the many heidless chicken runs that Gareth Evans was famous for.

2nd top goalscorer last season with 10 goals. If that doesn't show his importance I really don't know what will.

I take it you'd gone for a pie in the first half when Shiels wriggled his way past 2 or 3 Barça players out on the left touchline?

People can go on about his inconsistencies but in my view Shiels is one of the few proper footballers we have at the moment. I know there are no sympathy votes for disabilites in the professional game but I think I'm right in saying he has only 50% vision. Given his technical ability I don't think there's any way he would be at Hibs if it wasn't for that misfortune. He lacks real strength and some other all round factors too but his basic technique is good enough for the EPL or La Liga in my opinion. He and O'Brien looked to be the only players last night who should've been on the same field as Barça.

Scoring 10 goals last season and for most of it he was out of the picture. If both he and Zemmama are given free supporting roles for the front one or two then I personally feel Deano will get more than 10 goals this season.

He is a proven finisher.

No where near deserves th ekind of praise he gets, yes he is a decent footballer but the 145 per game Deano Deano Deano chants is way over the top.

The best player at ER just now is Chris Hogg, IMO he should be our capt instead of Lex Luthor!

Shiels is one of our best players at this time.

But - and there always is - you have to hope that he has improved as he has gotten older or is it that he now shines in a squad which does not have the likes of Riordan, Brown, O'Connor (maybe!!) Thomson, Murph, Ivan (maybe) and Whittaker - probably missed some as well.

There is never smoke without fire and he was not exactly a first choice with Mowbray as well as Collins, so perhaps he is shining in our current squad as oppose to him improving.

My own opinion is that he can change a game - usually from the bench - and the competive games he has started (with the exception of ICT Hat Trick game in the cup) he can flatter to deceive.

But right now he would be one of the first names on the sheet every game.


The bit about him and Zemmama having a free role behind the striker(s) would be good if we had other reliable midfielders in with them which unfortunately due to the non-replacement of the players we have lost in the past few seasons is currently impossible.

Its going to be a long hard season unless we get new faces in now !!

I think if we're struggling then he's more likely to get very frustrated at Hibs. This may result in a couple of things, his disciplinary record getting worse and/or players like him and Hoggy sounding out their agents about possible moves back down south.
However, I don't think we'll be in that sort of trouble. There are 3 or 4 far worse teams than us in the league, and I think we'll be ok. WHether or not the players get frustrated will be down to whatever goals they have set themselves personally for the upcoming season.

Ok we aint been playing well, but no danger will we be dragged into a releagtion dogfight, just cos one of the biggest clubs in the wrold papped us 6-0.

Not being able to score against Raith is something worth considering if your looking at a top 6 finish. The standard of play, not even just the barca game has been shite. For some reason i feel we have went downhill since the final.
