This was always going to happen, and when it did it was always going to lead to the shattering of any confidence the squad may have and ruin morale of players and fans leading into the season.

Simple fact is, even at our recent best a few seasons ago, we were nowhere near good enough to play teams like Barcelona and would've been humiliated. At the time however morale may just about have survived the battering. With so much pessimism already for the season ahead, this was the worst move possible. In reality this game is doing nothing more than proving we're nowhere near good enough to play at Barcelona's level, but the far more damaging impact will be that that failure will innevitably be bolted onto the more relevant signals of poor quality we're seeing against more realistically matched opposition.

The whole thing has been an almighty mistake from day one, and now the apocolyptic nightmare endgame that seemed innevitable from the outset to everyone except the club is kicking in, leaving everyone heading into the start of the season in the worst frame of mind possible.
