Funny enough I was thinking back tonight to the last time we lost at home in Europe and that was what I assumed.

Thirteen games since 1974 tells its own story.........We hardly ever qualify nor get very far anymore.

At least losing to Juve in 1974 was no disgrace.

Elfsborg have no European pedigree, we used to have one.

That sounded impressive if you hadn't mentioned the thirteen games bit. The Huns must have played nearly that many last season alone.

Considering we have qualified for Europe 3 times in 30 years i dont think we should be too upset at losing our unbeaten record.

I can remember being at that game against Juventus as an excited wee nine year old laddie. 32,000 at Easter Road that night against a team which contained most of the Italian National side.

At least 3 players who went on to win the world cup in 1982. Dino Zoff would have had fonder memories than of his previous visit to ER.

Indeed Bobby. The mighty Hibernian 5 Naples 0.

Dino Zoff picking five out of the net and the Hibs marching on 6-4 on aggregate.

I think Naples went on to become italian champions that season really putting our performance into perspective.

There you go, being able to beat Italians finest in the late 60's to not being able to get out of the traps today. Sad state of affairs particularly for those of us who grew up watching Hibs compete and compete well regularly in Europe in our youth.

Hibs being Hibs though I think we lost the following Saturday 0-1 at home to Morton.

Despite playing Alan Reid, we still drew 1-1. Garry O' Connor scored.

Oh, and as an aside.

We've played 42 home games in European competition in the last 50 years. We've won 28 drawn 9 and lost 5.

The teams we've lost to are:

Rheims
Red Star Belgrade
Liverpool
and Juventus.

All whom won the European Cup - except for Rheims who only finished runners up.

Oh yes and Elfsborg. There goes the golden age.

Was that the Argentinian guy who also played against us in the first leg of the Napoli tie?

He WAS brilliant - by 1974 he must have been in his 40's if it was the same bloke.

That's the same guy - [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register] - you've some memory minding that.

[Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register] says he was a brazilian and Italian international.

Edit: if you look at the wikipedia article it says he was a member of the Brazil World Cup winning squad in 1958 as a 19 year old, and then was a member of the Italian world cup squad in 1962. Wouldn't happen these days.

He was Brazilian. Doh!

The reason I remember him was from the season Milan won the Champions' Cup. 14 goals in 9 games, scoring twice in the Final. That's an incredible achievement.

I'm just astonished he isn't better remembered - how many players have done anything like that in Europe?

When we played Napoli, I was a bit disappointed he wasn't playing in the second leg at ER. I'd have liked to have seen him. In hindsight, I'm quite happy he stayed in Italy.

I was introduced to him by an Italian friend of mine in Rotterdam in 2000 at the final of Euro 2000 when Italy lost to France.

When I told him I remembered Hibs putting five past him he wasn't too pleased.
