The Scottish Premier League has announced its biggest television deal, proclaiming it as a significant cash boost for its 12 clubs.
A £125m contract has been agreed with Setanta Sports to continue the rights to live SPL matches for a further four years until 2014.
SPL executive chairman Lex Gold said: "£125m marks the biggest-ever TV deal in Scottish football history.
"This will allow clubs to re-invest to make the Scottish game even stronger." <!-- E SF -->
Setanta's present contract, which ends in 2010, was worth £54.5m.

Good as this sounds I really would still rather the BBC done more to ensure we actually got some coverage of our countries top league. I don'treally fancey paying however much it is a month to see only 5 hibs matches a year. the other games do not really bother me at all.

About 30% to top place in the league, 20% for second is the split I think? Think the rest is then pretty much down the line so each place higher is worth about £60k and there's a minimum of £500k or something like that?

Also think there is something to do with fees for each game played, but could well be wrong about that.

It's been cancelled, they said on the final one of last season that it was the last ever edition. Never will it "grace" our screens again...thank feck!


Hopefully we'll get to see some sort of benefit from this increased deal.

I think I read somewhere that 48% of the money is split evenly between all twelve clubs. The remaining 52% is allocated on the basis of final league placing with the champions picking up around 17%, runners up 13%, and 3rd place 9%. Amounts reduce in relation to league placing.

Personally I'd like to see more like 60-70% shared evenly with the balance going to performance related pay.

Anything that increases the turnover of football clubs has to be welcomed though it's hard to see how the quality of player attracted to Hibs will be that different as TV money throughout Europe in every league just gets higher and higher with every new TV deal that is negotiated.

It might mean though that the second tier Scandinavians and Eastern European players where TV income (and hence salary's) are weak might be willing to give the SPL a shot once they realise they aren't getting into the English Championship.

'Saint' Rodney will be quite chuffed as even more money flows into Hibs coffers though this won't stop him having the brass neck to ask the supporters to 'Buy A Brick for the New East Stand'

One things for sure even more utterly dross players are going to be swanning around all clubs on £2,000 -£3,000 - £4,000 a week or £200,000 a year and the signing on fees to attract some 15 year old who is the star of his local boys club are going to be enormous.

Quality players of the past with little retirement income and very demanding and to them possibly demeaning jobs like Pat Stanton and Jimmy O'Rourke and Alex Cropley must be wondering where it all went wrong 'Because it's football Pat but not as we know it'.

It sounds good for the SPL but I wonder why Setanta is so keen to buy a further 4 years for double the price when they still have a year to go. Was there another company interested and if so wouldn't it have been better to encourage a bidding war?

Only reason I can see is that they got in early because they think that the prices for the rights to live football are going to go up in the next couple of years. Scottish fitba is one of their staples, and I'd guess where they have built the bulk of their subscribers is from Scotland. They need content, and Scottish fitba is cheap compared to anything in England.

From the SPLs point of view, having some deal which is double the current amount in place for two years in the future isn't a ridicilous idea. They've went down the line of knocking something back when they thought they could get something better, and got seriously stung because of it.

Pretty safe deal for both parties imo.

It must be difficult for anyone to comprehend why the richest two clubs just get the lions share of the money year in year out thereby helping to ensure they remain dominant and always get the lions share.

What about an American Football style idea where the lowest club [lets concentrate on the SPL] get the most and the highest club gets the least in an attempt to look like we remotely give a fuck about trying to even things up instead of simply maintaining the status quo

I've done a quick, back of a fag packet calculation. Presuming that the £125M is split equally over the four years, each year's 31.25M would be divided as follows:

1. 4,012,500 (17%)
2. 3,687,500 (15%)
3. 2,793,750 (9.5%)
4. 2,631,250 (8.5%)
5. 2,550,000 (8%)
6. 2,468,750 (7.5%)
7. 2,387,500 (7%)
8. 2,306,250 (6.5%)
9. 2,225,000 (6%)
10. 2,143,750 (5.5%)
11. 2,062,500 (5%)
12. 1,981,250 (4.5%)

As 48% of the money (according to the Scotsman) is divided equally, all clubs receive £1.25M per year with the remaing 52% divided on the basis shown above (admittedly these %s come from a contributor to the Scotsman so may not be the most reliable!)

Sorry dude, didn't make that clear at all. The figures above from Contempible Hibby are what I was going for (though I didn't know them and was going on my memory). The initial split means each side get about 4-5% each, then what's left is the split I was talking about. I was a bit over with top, and second by the look of it. The top two sides get about a third of the total.
