Real fans sit in the East - myth or reality?

I know this is a topic that's been done to death, and I generally disagree with the idea that the 'best' fans sit in the East.

However, I did notice on Thursday that, by the end of the game, the west and north stands had emptied a fair bit before the end of the match, while the east still seemed to be about as full as it had been at kick-off. I couldn't see the south stand, as that's where I was sitting, but I don't think there were really enough fans in it in the first place to make much of a difference. Of course everyone has a right to leave early if they feel like it (I never do, though), but the sight of our other two stands rapidly emptying actually made me think, for the first time, that maybe there is some evidence to support the idea that the 'real' fans sit in the east.

Previously, I'd thought that idea was a load of nonsense, but the sight of the stands emptying made me think about the future support of the club in the slightly bigger picture. Will the families and kids, and the people who have mainly started coming since Hibs became a half decent side again, still come if we go through, as some are predicting, a spell of Blobby-ball? Or if we end up going through a few seasons finishing in the bottom 6, or without a decent cup run?

It seems to me that the people the club can depend on to come regardless of any of that are those in the east stand, and, of course, those who have always come, no matter where they choose to sit. However, if the rapid decline that was seen in attendance over the course of only one game, on Thursday night, is to be indicative of that which we can expect to see over the course of any period of poor displays, then we could be in trouble, and also in the embarrassing position of having a brilliant 20 000 seat stadium, with crowds of 8, 9, and 10 000 being dwarved by it.

Whether the fact that east-standers can generally be depended upon to show up regardless makes them "real" fans or not is debatable - personally, I don't think that simply showing up makes you a "real" fan; the way you act while you're in the ground, in terms of supporting your team, is far more important, IMO - but it looks like these "real" fans are going to be quite important if the team stops performing, in a purely financial sense.

I saw fans leaving the East Stand midway through the second half.

I was in the west, up in the gods of the press box and although I dont leave early usually [did it against motherwell in the cup and the game against rangers where zoomer scored a late goal]. The game on Thursday was absolutely dire, I think we all agree on that, and I wouldnt blame anyone for leaving early. I still wasnt going to but with about 10 minutes left I was deseperate for the loo so I went downstairs. When I came out the loo my mate was standing outside waiting for me in the hope that I couldnt be arsed walking all the way up again to watch that dross. He was right, I couldnt and we didnt. When we got to the pub our mates, who were in the East as usual, were already there so I would have to say myth otherwise we would have easily beaten them to the battle cruiser.

I[we, the Blue Toon shower] sit in the East & we left early on Thursday because it was poor fare.
It was a meaningless fixture in terms of stakes[apart from league position prize money] so i wouldn't blame anyone for leaving early.

If we start off next season with a string of defeats then its time to start worrying, but a one off end of season nowt fixture?

so because i can't afford a ST or to go to matches i'm not a real fan?

Because when i lived in the west and it was going to work out at 60 quid a game so didn't go to many, does that mean i'm not a real fan?

I think a 'real fan' is someone who is willing to sit and watch the dire performance on Thursday and say, 'there's always next season', Fans that will stand and take abuse about supporting a team that isn't the old firm and say 'But i do support them and always will'

Being a real fan is being proud off the team you support and shout it from the rooftops, and getting behind the team in anyway you are able to.

real fans sit in the east, total myth,

Re: Real fans sit in the East - myth or reality?

I go in the east stand and always have done except for one season and I don't think myself or anyone else in the east is a better/real supporter than those in any other part of the ground. The atmosphere may have been better a couple of years ago (particularly in Mowbrays first season) but this season the atmosphere in the east has been shite. It was cringeworthy the songs being sung in the east on thursday but I don't think it was loud enough to be heard in other parts of the ground - I don't include the Mercer song in that comment because I have no problem whatsoever with that song and I will sing that as loud as anyone in there but thats a seperate issue - the Murray song and the "Edinburgh is wonderful" song along with Charlie Richmond is a beast are imho a joke yet some posters have the cheek to grumble about Dean Shiels songs!! Sooner the east is ripped down the better for me
