...did Hibs manage to sign Sauzee and Latapy? Is there any way we could do something like that again instead of the sign 'em and hope it turns out for the best approach with less talented players.

By paying them (esp Sauzee) the sort of wages today's Hibs players can only dream of (or double by moving along the M8).

Judas was given the credit.

Sauzee came via 'that agent' who was touting him to Hibs. Judas initially wanted him to play a trial, which Franck refused to do, and Judas reluctantly was persuaded to take him on.

Latas was recommended by Tony Rougier, who had been signed from Raith Rovers. Again Judas was unsure, as he had taken another Trinidadian on trial at Motherwell who clearly had no future in the game, and had moved him out. Some guy called Marvin somebody I think.

These two flukey signings did more than anything to disguise the dross that came and went during the time Judas was here as long as we wanted him.

The signing of a particular player has more than a slice of luck attached to it.

We could sign someone for £1m tomorrow & he could be poor. He may not like Edinburgh, the climate, one or more of his team mates, one of the coaches, his wife may not want to be in Scotland, his kids are getting a hard time at school.
Lots of factors to take on board , not only his ability to play football.

As the Doc points out, from a pile of shit we found two gems & there was loadsa luck involved.

I think the point being made was that Judas had literally dozens of players going through the revolving door. He was givena massive budget, and virtually free reign to sign who ever he wanted at pretty huge wages. He managed to acquire a pretty large number of dud-to-average players. The two stand-outs (to many Hibs fans) were Le God and Latas and neither were the product of Judas keen brain or eye for a player. Both were basically 'accidents'.

There is no doubt that the team involved in the 6-2 game would be seen as an improvement to most if not all of the current team

Fair enough. You are quite happy to be patronised by all & sundry as being 'the best footballing side in Scotland'.
Personally i would give up some of the football & win some trophies[not one every generation], but that may be due to being a little short on time & i want to gloat before i go.

What is really being talked about here is the likes of Fabrice Henry...Eduardo Hurtado...Alex Marinkov...Frederic Dacquin...we could go on.

The budget then far surpassed the wages budget now. Many of the squad were earning far in excess of the current squad because the board backed GJP financially in a manner they had not done before and they have not done since. Nor are they likely to - as it was that overspending that put us so far into the red.

Doc is right. GJP wanted Franck to come on trial as he thought at his age he would be "too heavy legged" (GJP's words) and Franck said GTF. Je suis Franck Sauzee.

Latapy was offered training facilities by Hibs after he had been training at Villa with Dwight Yorke and hadnt been offered anything - again a tip off from Rougier and another piece of wonderful good fortune.

Wouldnt happen now - Hibs no longer pay the kind of money that would manage to secure such fortunate finds any more.

McLeish also signed Mixu, who scored a lot of important goals; Uli Laursen, a great talent. Gary Smith, John O'Neil and Matty Jack, who turned out to be good servants. David Zitelli, another guy with a pedigree of top clubs. Paul Hartley, okay didn't work out but we had such a good side anyway. He almost landed Didier Agathe, who would have been a massive addition had he not been on a short deal. DLC made the club
800K in the space of a year, overall the signings that mattered he got right, by luck or design...who cares.
