Mixu Paataleinen is planning to add quality, rather than quantity, to his squad for next season. The Hibernian boss is targetting a maximum of three new signings. But he's also aiming to have a bit of a clear-out over the next couple of months...


Is he saying that it will be 3 players plus Van Zanten and possibly Yantorno, or do we get 1 more player, possibly 2?

I'd agree with Mixu's view. Hopefully we have similar ideas about what constitutes quality and - perhaps more importantly - that Rod Petrie agrees.

He's completing his rehabilitation with us with a look at signing when he is back to full fitness

Hopefully it means three players after Van Zanten and Yantorno, with hopefully, Kerr, Donaldson, O,Brien, Gatheussi, prob Boozy maybe even Benji, plus Courier and McCaffery we should be looking to get rid of six players. We do have probably the biggest squad outside the ugly pair I would say.

I think a left winger, striker and a midfielder hard man is what we are needing at the moment.

Ha, well they probably have the biggest with their reserve team Kaunas B.

Fair play to them though I think they will break the bank this year to bring back the glory days to Tynie, starting with Mark Kerr at United.

I totally support this way forward, let's hope Mixu gets the quality he is looking for. This is the only way we are going to progress IMO. Good, quality players being brought to the club and augmented by our excellent Youth Policy bringing through the best young players in the country.

If it is three more on top of Van Zanten, IMO it will be a replacement for Boozy, another striker, and possibly a goalkeeper. I have a feeling Makalamby is not going to be around next season, though I realise I could be totally wrong, it's just a feeling I have. He has been dropped completely from the starting eleven, and he is one of our highest earners along with the soon to be departed O'Brien. If Yantorno can be added to that list of possible arrivals and we manage to hang on to Jones and Fletcher we should look forward to seeing a better Hibernian team next season, and better equipped to challenge for honours.

It will be interesting also to see who leaves over the next few weeks. O'Brien, Kerr, Noubissie, and Ghattusie look likely candidates. I think Benji will also be away, and an awful lot depends on whether or not a big offer comes in for Fletcher.

I doubt very much if Kerr, donaldson and O'Brien will be going anywhere. Why should they. Clayton D is improving now that he has had time to adjust to a higher level. O'Brien will still come good. Kerr does alright when played although some people will simply not allow themselves to see that.

Hertz have 66 players in their first team squad.

I agree with Mixu about this. With the amount of players we lost last season, to an extent we had to bring in too many players last summer. Always think it's hard to blend in new players if there're lots of them all coming in at the same time.

Our squad is a reasonable size, but too big in certain areas, while light in others imo. Bringing in two or three quality players to supplement the squad we have, and clearing out some of the players in the areas where they're signed is what we should be going for.

Keepers
McNeil, Ma-Kalambay - Both pretty decent and developing. They should be competing against each other for the gloves. Wouldn't mind a new older keeper coming in as a new coach and cover just to teach them something different. Don't need anyone here apart from that imo.

Full backs
Gathuessi, McCann, Hanlon, Zarabi, and Stevenson & Canning though it isn't their natural positions - Lots of players here, and some of them should be surplus to requirements imo. I'd keep McCann, Hanlon and Gathuessi but wouldn't mind seeing Zarabi away and someone else brought in who can either play anywhere across the back four, or who gives you a lot more going forward than Hanlon on the left. McCann & Hanlon would be my choice for who should start next season in posession of the full back berths, and I'd keep Gathuessi for games where we are looking for a bit more pushing up and as cover because imo he's been decent all season albeit with more than one wtf moment.

Centre halfs
Canning, Hogg, Jones, McCormack - Could see someone away from here who would definitely need replaced. Murray can fit in at CH but it's not his best position, and he's a bit wasted here imo. Think Canning has been pretty acceptable when he's played here, and McCormack looks a decent player and I feel he has been a bit unlucky not to get more of a look in after he's acquited himself well whenever he's had a chance.

Sitting midfielders
Kerr, Murray, Chisholm, Rankin, Stevenson - Really cannot see Boozy still being here next season so have left him out. Without him there's a serious lack of creativity from here. Stevenson needs to get far more of a chance to re-establish himself as imo he is a more complete player than the other options other than Murray who gives you loads of energy. Rankin delivers a ball from out wide very well, but doesn't get involved an awful lot. Kerr has been pretty average and is pretty dispensable unless he becomes a lot better.

Attacking midfielders
Zemamma, Shiels, and Yantorno (?) - Three pretty similar players, although I'd have Zemamma in front of the others since he can pick out passes which none of the others can. Deano does give some good things such as being the most reliable for getting up in support of and beyond the strikers. Yantorno we'll need to see whether or not he recovers from his injury but he looks a very decent addition. Possibly one too many players here though with what is likely to be only one position, and it's Zemamma who most justifies that place imo.

Wide players
O'Brien, and Morais - We're light here. Morais has flattered to deceive imo, although I would say that if he can improve on his final ball and decision making he's worth keeping. There might have been a few signs he's adding that in the last few weeks, otherwise I would have punted him. O'Brien has had a pretty awful start to his career at Hibs. He's got pace, he's got a decent delivery, but it just hasn't happened for him. An effective direct wide player who can score and create a few goals would be a significant improvement to the squad so I would hope to see this addressed as a priority in terms of signings.

Strikers
Fletcher, Nish, Benji, Donaldson, Campbell, Gray - Too many strikers tbh. Hard decisions to be made here, and one or two of them probably have to go. If someone is interested in him, I would not object to Campbell being put out on loan to someone like St Mirren or Hamilton if he was going to be getting a run with them. If we can keep Fletcher this is an area of strength, if we don't we have an awful lot of players with an awful lot to prove. Benji is the enigma here. He's got loads of talent, but he needs to start showing it, and he needs to realise he is not guaranteed a place because of his ability. When he's having a bad game with nothing going for him he has to still be contributing to the team whether that is closing down more or whatever. Gray has to make the breakthrough next season. Donaldson has got better in terms of awareness etc over the course of the season and is worth keeping imo. Nish is pretty much as advertised and will get you a few goals and is the best we have at holding the ball up.

So overall, I'd say there are positions that need strengthened pretty urgently such as wide players, and possibly in defence. If you can improve the side with better quality in other areas you do so, but these should be the priority areas imo. I've also not seen the reserves enough to know whether anyone is close to breaking through from there.
