Default Hibs away colours, why yellow? why purple?

Does anyone know when Hibs first wore away colours at a game? Was it really in a European game or did they wear them long before that?

Secondly, is there any rhyme or reason to the away colours? I've heard that purple was chosen as a colour as a quirk of fate. Someone found a set of purple strips in the 60s and assumed them to have been hibs colours, but what happened was that the old blue shorts had been washed with the old red tops from the public trials and the result was purple tops and shorts. These got tossed to the side, only to be discovered 20 odd years later.

The only other story I've heard about purple is that Tom Harts wife liked the colour. To be honest, I find that hard to believe.

When Bukta became Hibs first shirt sponsor (the first deal of it's kind in Scotland), they weren't allowed to wear the sponsor's name if the match was to be televised. This included highlights only coverage and continued for a good few years, even when most clubs had a shirt sponsor.

Instead of sending Hibs out in a "normal" strip for these matches, Bukta came up with a very good marketing ploy and had Hibs wear the purple/white strips. The tv commentators would invariably say something about why Hibs were playing in purple, and even if they didn't mention Bukta by name, everyone knew who they were talking about anyway.

As for yellow, at the time of our first "Norwich" style strip, yellow/gold was the main colour in our badge. That's the only reason I can think of.

I believe it was Tom Hart's wife in the early seventies, it was purple to you and me, but officially it was African Violet, if my failing memory serves me right.

it's because some hardcore types believe that the irish tricolour should be green white and yellow / gold to represent the vatican's colours rather than protestantism's orange.

the purple meanwhile is based on the colours of cardinal's robes.

that sounds like the story of how the yams ended up with maroon strips.

I was always led to believe that maroon was the city of Edinburgh's official colour for the Council etc, hence the reason LRT buses were also maroon. Being the establishment Club it just follows that the Yams would wear maroon!

I thought that the purple was to do with the Scottish thistle and purple heather and the green from the "Little Ireland" community who found us. Our last purple strip was violet - was that Mr Hart's wife's name by any chance

Hibs had worn purple prior to this strip. It was in a European game against Sporting Lisbon. Don't know why though.

The reason we went to yellow is a fairly boring one that harks back to the days of the old Bukta tops, as has been established Bukta designed a kit for Hibs to wear when they were on TV, only problem being is it clashed with Rangers and IIRC, St Johnstone at the time so Hibs needed a third top which was the canary yellow version.

I have most of the programmes from that season so will do a little bit of digging to get the full info and perhaps a few piccies, although they'll be in that horrible green tint that used to be prevelant in the progs at that time

The colours for the city of Edinburgh are maroon. The council changed to black and red in the 90s when it was restructured . Hence the old corp buses were maroon.

Hard to believe or not that is the reason purple was chosen, was featured pretty heavily in the papers at the time and had a picture of Shiela(?) Hart with one of teh strips. We wore them away in Europe either against Sporting Lisbon or around about that time. This was long before the Bukta thing. The purple Bukta top is without doubt the worst Hibs strip ever.

Hibs have worn blue shorts a few times, first when we won the Scottish Cup in 1887.

EDIT

If it were a Jamboesque washing accident how come the sleeves came out white?
