Was it purple with white sleeves or not?

Re: Hibs away colours, why yellow? why purple?

When was the first time Hibs played in an away strip? Was it the Sporting Lisbon game in 72?

Had we ever worn away colours prior to this that anyone can remember or read?

Hibs have worn blue shorts a few times, first when we won the Scottish Cup in 1887.

EDIT

If it were a Jamboesque washing accident how come the sleeves came out white?
It's something that has never been covered in any of the Hibs history books K, so I'm flipped if I know how I'd heard the Mrs Hart story - obviously there is something in it. I'd be interested to see the EEN's of the time.

The Mrs Hart story is the one.

Go to the National Library of Scotland mate, ask for a years Edinburgh Evening News at a time. Great reading.

White sleeves.

No one actually knows the real story of the formation of Hearts. There's at least two versions and maybe 1 or 2 variations on each of those versions. Some of their "history" is based on tales one of their captains told a newspaper sometime in the 1920's - pinch of salt required for me when getting info from some auld jakie jambo.

Anyway the reason no-one knows the real story about the formation of Hearts is because no one gave a fcuk about preserving it.

In 1977 Hibs became the first British club to wear sponsored shirts, featuring the Bukta logo. The television companies refused to broadcast sponsored shirts at the time so Hibs were obliged to introduce an alternative kit to be worn when the s were present. The first of these was in purple and white although a green and white version was introduced before the end of the season.

This is the earliest reference i could find for the purple kit, however it still does not explain the WHY part off the question

still looking tho

There's a reference to it on this thread mate. It was Shiela Hart's favourite colour and we wore it first against Sporting Lisbon in an away leg of the Cup Winner Cup.

Dunno Beefy as I wasn't at the Sporting Lisbon away game. If the purple in that was swapped for green though it looks a good approximation, bar the badge which is obviously madey up.

I did see them wear purple at Parkhead years later and bought one of those purpley Bukta tops. it was scratchy and looked and felt awful.

it's a fuckin horrid colour; like an alkie's shite - blood and shit mixed together.

it just shows there lack of class; there's lots of lovely shades at the deep / dark red end of the spectrum, and they pick the only one that's skankin.

Have you ever tried fitting "terracotta" into a football song?
