Why I hate the end of season SPL Split!

It's blatantly unfair that two teams as evenly matched as Hibs and the Arabs are (they've now drawn the last 5 matches in a row and level on 51 points apiece) don't have equaltiy when it comes to home and away fixtures.

I know that at the start of the season thay can't tell how many homes and aways each team that finish in each half of the league will have played v's each other, so in essence the whole thing is plainly flawed.

The whole point in a league system is that all the teams will play equal numbers of games against each other home and away, thus ensuring a level playing field.

I know that it's unlikely to change just because a few supporters don't like it and that due to the way that Smeltic and the Huns games are carved up they are unlikely to ever be disadvantaged by having an inequitable split.

The proper fix would be for a bigger league with only 2 games per opposition, but if that's not likely to happen, would it be possible (in cases where it's impossible to have equitable splits - I.E. a handful of games at the end of the season) that a neutral venue could be used ????? Just a thought....

Thoughts?

you know what?

its hertz fault.

seriously.

They would have been predicted by the computer to be in the top six and theyre no.

Someone else has their place - either utd or aberdeen by my reckoning as the SPL will have expected the old firm and us to be there based on prvious seasons. i reckon it is probably utd. which means that the balance is out as they work out the fixtures based on a probable top six finish and set the pre split fixtures accordingly. if someone gets int he top six that they thought wouldnt then the whole thing goes to pot

And Kilmarnock - they were supposed to be there too.

Conversely, its also Motherwell and United's faults for doing well.

We would have still had the same home/away split had Killie/Yams made the top 6, with the Huns/Minis at ER and Killie/Dons/Tic away.

Re: Why I hate the end of season SPL Split!

Haven't Hibs, United and Well all ended up with 19 home, 19 away anyway (albeit with that meaning Well have 3 home games post split to Hibs/United's 2)?

I though it was (yet again) the Mutton Molesters who have ended up winning out of the split chaos, with 20 home and 18 away games.

Re: Why I hate the end of season SPL Split!

Despite the split, I still think Hibs can finish 3rd. My predictions see us finishing on 58 points, Motherwell on 56, and Dundee Utd on 53.

Hibs to beat Aberdeen, draw with Rangers at home, lose to Celtic away, and beat Motherwell at home. (51pts + 7 = 58pts)

Dundee Utd to draw with Motherwell away, draw away to Aberdeen, and lose their last two games against the Old Firm (51pts + 2pts = 53pts)

Motherwell to draw with Dundee Utd, lose to Celtic at home, lose to Rangers away, beat Abderdeen at home, lose to Hibs away, and also to lose their other game in hand versus Rangers, regardless of where that might be. Even if they pick up an unexpected draw in a game in hand v Rangers, they still end up with 57 points (52pts + 4/5 - 56/7pts)

Think the key for us is getting a result at Aberdeen.

But the difference is that we were due to play them so that we had 2 home and 2 away games. We've ended up playing 3 times at Tannadice against a direct rival for the UEFA cup place.

I would personally try to make the fixtures fair in the split. Make it so that you play everyone you can home and away 2 times each. If a team has an extra home game (ie 20 rather than 19) then don't include that game on STs and split the gate 50/50 with the side who have 18. It's the only way it makes sense to me without completely distorting the ethos of a league being a test of who the best side has been over a season.

Agree with most of that - especially the bit about beating the Sheep. Three points there, and we're in the driving seat IMO
