& unlike Mowbray, Mixu seems to like the idea. It helps if there is some positive vibe about it.

Re: At least

Would hate to think that we'll settle for the Inter-toto though, really hope we still go all out for 3rd as that would be far better. Still it is nice to know we have that avenue to fall back on!

We go all out for third place but safe in the knowedge that we have a meaningful pre-season ans another route into the UEFA cup proper.

I am glad Hibs have applied for this which means come what may we will be playing at least some European fitba in the summer.

The yams on the other hand are going to butlins.

Still enter it in the 2nd round.

[Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register] will keep you up to date as the places fill up. Currently qualified for the intertoto are FK Moscow (formerly Torpedo maybe?) Rosenberg, Elfsborg, Turku, and the Baltic countries.

Think the intertoto is still regional, so the chances are we'd play (I think) someone from northern Europe again.

Re: At least

I used to be dead against Hibs taking part in this tournament, but i've changed my mind on it. At the end of the day it gives us a few games in European competition, and a chance to get into the UEFA Cup. These games become our pre-season friendlies effectively, but there is a competitive element to them.

I still have a feeling that the players would be none too plussed about re-starting pre-season training so early. Especially the likes of Steven Fletcher who badly needs a proper break from football over the summer.

They might to back to doing Highland League tours like they did in the old days - if their budget stretches to that.

Our season is finishing on the 18th May, and the first game is round about the start-middle of July. They can get 5-6 weeks off then get back into it no probs. If we get someone from one of the Baltic states again, or the Faroes or whatever, we really shouldn't need too much of a pre-season behind us to get through.

The last couple of years we've played in it we've had very good seasons. Could be coincidence of course, but we started off well with the players looking very sharp.

Re: At least

I think it's a shame that the Inter-Toto is so often quoted as a mickey-mouse tournament. It offers the squad a change of scenery and a taste of football abroad, at the very least. The fans get a chance to spend 8 quid on a half-litre of lager too, just to remind them of where Gordon Brown wants to go.

Re: At least

I've never actually been too sure of the format of the intertoto cup so I looked it up on wikipedia. So for anyone else who doesn't know how it works:

From the 2006 tournament the format for the Cup changed. There are three rounds instead of the previous five, and the eleven winning teams from the third round went through to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.[6] For the first time since the 1960s, there is provision for an actual trophy — whichever sides go furthest in the UEFA Cup will each be awarded a trophy.[7] The first winners were Newcastle United, who won the 2006 tournament outright by going further in the 2006-07 UEFA Cup than the other ten qualifiers.[8]

Only one team from each national association will be allowed to enter. However, should one or more nations not take up their place, the possibility has been left open for nations to have a second entrant. Seedings and entry are determined by each association. [6] Teams from the weakest federations enter at the first round stage, while those from mid-level federations enter in the second round, and those from the strongest federations enter in the third round.

Also one other thing, the article states that the intertoto is to be abolished in 2009.
