I can only comment on the players I've seen...regularly used in discussions but is it true...?

the Hibs all time greatest XI as chosen by the bounce would seem to imply alot of people can make a call on players they've never seen in the flesh...

I've read and seen enough about turnbull tornados and famous five but is that enough to really comment? I mean folk will generally only write about the good stuff - so anything i've not seen in the flesh is really someone elses view of a player.

I could pick a hibs XI of players who wore the green before i was even born and i'd think them pretty good too, but all on second hand accounts and dvds of their best bits?

It used to piss me off when folk would only mention players they'd seen (generally younger members on the board) I thought they should do a bit of digging about and find out more about other players, but then again why should they when it'll always be someone else's opinion?

Is it worth while learning about the history of hibs or just live the bit that you live and witnessed live?

I think it's always worthwhile for a young supporter to see some of the history of his team, particularly nowadays when those of us who can remember the likes of Turnbull's Tornadoes are regarded as "auld yins". Sadly, I wasn't born when the Famous Five were strutting their stuff but my old man used to regale me with his photographic memory of many of their goals etc and it whetted my appetite for the game as a youngster.

I think you only have to look at the scores that used to be banged in - REGULARLY - by the famous 5 to realise that they were definitely something special.

OK it was a different world back then, however they regularly scored 5 or 6 goals in games so can't be excluded from discussions about true legends of the club.

Also remember that Hibs played froendlies against some of the biggest teams in the world at the time, and were pretty successful too!

Add to that the fact that in those days players tended to remain at their club for much longer, it's hard to compare players that were successful at hibs for over 10 years with guys that played well for a couple of seasons before being sold on.

It is impossible for anyone to name an all time Hibs XI.

I'd love to comment on players like Stanton or Reilly but I'm only going from stories I've heard from older generations or in books I've read.

Can the youngsters be blamed for commenting only the players they've seen -look at the older generation , they regale us with tales of the Famous Five, Stanton, O'Rourke, et al. You don't hear them hark on about the players from the 20's or 30's, surely they were also handed down stories of players from that era?!

So to have a go at someone like myself who's all time Hibs XI would only include players from 1990 onwards would be hyprocritical?
