Why are we such a poor away side ?

I've thought about this for a while, and never quite been able to come up with a proper answer. Results this season have shown once again that Hibs are a different side at Easter Road than we are when we go on the road. I wonder why that is ? The pitch is generally the same, and we are playing the same rules as we do at home. Is it just psycological ?

I don't really know the reasons, but I have a few ideas on the matter.

In my opinion, you have to have a group of players with experience and a strong mentality in order to win regularly away from home. The OF regularly turn in poor performances on the road, but they have the ability to cope with adversity, and to go on a grind out a win. The players they have seem to be able to cope better when playing at grounds like Motherwell, Kilmarnock, and Inverness..

At the moment, Hibs have too many players who play when they feel like it, or when the team is on a roll at Easter Road. We have a fair few decent ball-players who like to attack and play skilful football, but away from home you have to approach a game differently. The first thing you have to do is to compete in midfield. A team playing at home will want to have lots of posession, and attack from the off. The away team should be ready for this and get right in amongst them from the start and deny them posession. You also need players with pace who can hit home teams on the break as invariably that is when a team playing away from home will score. You also need players who will go in where it hurts, and will drive the team forward.

Hibs at the moment lack these players. It will take the manager some time to assemble the necessary type of squad in his own image, so this season we just have to try to get as many points as we can. However, I want to see Hibs performing much more consistantly away from home as from next season. Travelling Hibs fans pay too much money to be inflicted with some of the feeble efforts the team has produced on the road this season. Our away form has cost us dearly this season once again. No doubt in my mind that Hibs are a different proposition at Easter Road to the one which all too often turns up at other grounds.

Re: Why are we such a poor away side ?

I 100% agree with you.

At times i feel like im watching a totally different team to what i see at easter road. The mentality just does not seem right.

Only Mixu and the players can solve this. Personally id go out and sign 11 different players to play away matches as i am really fed up of some results and performances on the road this season. How many times have we come away from an away game and say "we didnt look like winning", "we were half-hearted"? With a visit to ibrox and tyncastle aside, overall our away form is dire.

Hopefully it is sorted out soon. Hibs at the moment, away from home, are just too predictable

I think the reality is that 9 times out of 10 when it comes to the crunch Hibs will let us down. It's all part of being a Hibee. We must be the most frustrating team in the country to support. But we fecking love them

Re: Why are we such a poor away side ?

This is nothing new and is one of the reasons i stopped going to away matches 20 years ago!, we have always ben pussycats away from home appart from a few years during the Turnbull reign.
Our players lack the mental strength and courage when we go on the road, you can tell by their body language with some of them as soon as they walk onto the pitch and in my view you only have half a player who will not work for the cause in away games.
The worst part for me is that it is down to lazyness with some of them who think that they can get away with a lesser input away from home when their is less of our own fans to get on their back, players that hide in away games should be punted now-how many teams that come to Easter Road do you see that never put a shift in?..not many in my view, by the way i think we had the same problem even with the golden boys under Mowbray but when the players move onto the OF they run their guts out for the cause...how can that be?.

Re: Why are we such a poor away side ?

I have been going for over 50 years and we have always been weak away from home. Sure we get the odd result but in general we have always been poor away since the mid fifties.
Would love to see the stats for the last 6 decades in terms of away wins.

Re: Why are we such a poor away side ?

I think this thread sums up my feelings on Saturday before kick off. The team selecftion, tactics and formation were wrong for me.
Hopefully Mixu can change this away from home trend.

Siimple, mixu is too conservative away from home.

To win in difficult places you have to take a gamble.

I don't think mixu likes to play that way.

I think Mixu will turn us into the the typical scandinavian type team. Hard to break down etc. Nothing too pretty but hopefully effective in it's own right. I reckon we'll see 3 or 4 new signings pre season and roughly the same amount leaving, maybe a couple more.
