Favourite manager

The thread about what sort of reception Tony Mowbray would get if he came back to ER made me wonder if any ex-boss would get a good reception. So, who is everyone's favourite Hibs manager of recent years (say from Alex Miller to Mixu)?
To be honest, and this might not be too popular, I'd have to go for Alex McLeish. I think that some of the football we played was spectacular and to get players like Sauzee, Latapy and Paatelainen to play in the first division was incredible. He was responsible for some of my favourite Hibs moments and it's just a pity how it all ended up.
I've included all full time managers in the poll, but can't see Duff Jimmy, Blobby or Kaiser Sauzee getting too many votes...

Re: Favourite manager

I voted for Mowbray. Some of the football played under him was wonderful to watch. Coming after the drudgery of blobbys style of play just made it even better to watch.

He still didn't win us a trophy though.

Voted for GJP purely for his overall record and in particular his derby record which was exceptional.

Re: Favourite manager

It was either GJP or JC for me.

GJP for his derby record, Collins as he's the only boss who won anything who isn't a hun wa#k. Though Miller signed some quality players.

Mowbray just reminds me of 3 games v hearts with 12 goals conceded, and bottling it in general, though we were nice to watch. Even if he won fcuk all.

voted Collins.

I voted for Collins.

I loved Mowbray, but I have more respect for Collins tbh. Collins came in and had a very hard job after expectations were raised to a very high (and imo unrealistic) level under Mowbray. And then Collins had to sell the vast majority of the best players that made that up that team. Some of that might have been down to bad man management from Collins, but anyone who thinks that if JC hadn't been our manager most of the players who left us would still be here are giving their minds a treat imo. I don't think JC was flawless, far from it, but I do think he made the players expect a bit more of themselves than Mowbray ever did. There was no more of the "we're just a young team" excuses that Mowbray regularly trotted out which ended up completely grating with me. Mowbray took over a team where the vast majority of the young players had all been blooded in the first team, and had a decent amount of experience for their age. They then had two seasons playing together under him. I don't think they were ever told to take the responsibility to win games, and bad performances were tolerated far too much.

It would have been a travesty if the side that had been built over 3-4 years which contained the best generation of young players I've ever seen at ER had won nothing. Under Mowbray I think that would have happened. Collins stopped that happening, and he walked out on Hibs as a point of principle, the only employee in recent times that I can remember at this club who was not solely motivated by money.

Until you said that i was in total disagreement about JC as i think a lot of others will be too, i cant help thinking that JC left us in the lurch but now with Mixu at the helm it isn't looking too bad. Think its too early to pass judgement yet on the big yin. I'm going for TM purely because of the style of the game we played then...

Hibs have been very lucky in the last 5 years to attract such quality managers such as Mcleish 'Tony' and JC for which 'Saint' Rodney deserves a lot of credit

Though you could argue that there is a law of averages argument but that's a bit churlish.

'The Sauzee' can't be judged after being 'dun' by 'The Fat Malky' after 66 days and Alex Miller would provoke a 'bandwidth' problem

with Jim Duffy easily winning hands down the worst ever manager in Hibs history.

'Boaby' doesn't deserve as much stick as he gets as his side was dismantled from under his feet though his dour personality and 'cinema' comment made him his own worst enemy and detracted from that short spell where he defeated Hearts with 10 men, knocked Celtc and 'Scotland's Shame' out of the cup and reached the CIS final winning one game 9-0.

Mcleish has a strong case and he has certainly proved himself subsequently at both 'Scotland's Shame' and the national team to be a quite outstanding football manager. However I still can't take to seriously the joke/pub league of the Scottish first division and despite a 9 month wonder spell in the SPL, the team was beginning to fall apart as he was shamelessly negotiating behind the scenes for his move to 'Scotland's Shame'.

It's very tempting to vote for JC as he took his team because it was his team as he picked, prepared and motivated the players that glorious day and throughout the campaign culminating with an almost flawless cup final performance.
To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
JC had an ambition and vision far beyond most usual managers but ultimately there is something flawed about his personality which in the long run he needs to address if he wants to be a success at football management.

Mowbray however just gets my vote as he might have been a 'choker' at Hibs and he might end up a 'choker' at WBA but he has the all round personality, knowledge, judge of a player and a principled belief in passing football that is very rare in football but he didn't quite have the luck at Hibs.

He might have won nothing at Hibs and in fact wasn't even close but I think given some more time and some more experience he would have brought the trophy back that the 'golden generation' richly deserved..

I don't think Collins left us in the lurch. He saw virtually an entire side sold from under him, saw virtually none of the money that came in from it being spent on the team, and imo he decided he couldn't work under those conditions. I would also point out that his last significant act as a Hibs manager was fighting the board tooth and nail to get Fletch a new contract... That isn't the action of someone who was deliberately trying to harm Hibs imo.

That JC DID have to fight tooth and nail to get Fletch his new contract should remind us all to not get too complacent...
