Re: Canning Signs

Should prove a very useful signing. Defensive cover is never short. Very impressed with the numbers we have. Not in quantity but real option wise. No player is now guaranteed to play.

Re: Canning Signs

Can't remember him at all at Gretna so don't know his qualities.

Is he a right back or centre half?

I think Mixu isn't happy with our right back options..

Re: Canning Signs

Canning prior to Gretna looked to be an outstanding player. A lot of clubs were interested in him but the lure of mega bucks won the day.Obviously his form plummeted along with Gretnas. Shrewd bit of business by yer man Mixu

Greenmachine will become famous soon enough
Re: Canning Signs

I think this is a good addition to the squad.

We now have proper cover for Rob Jones at centre-half, which means we don't have to put Ian Murray back there thus weakening the midfield. I wasn't impressed with the Murray/Hogg partnership against Gretna. I don't think either of them won a ball in the air all night, we badly missed Jones strength and arial ability. The fact that Canning can also play right-back is a bonus. Donald Park will have known his strengths as well from Canning's time at Ross County. An 18 month deal is best for both parties.

Spot on. Ian is fantastic as cover at centre half for Rob Jones, but in my opinion he is wasted in defence. We should never again be in the situation where we have to play someone like Kevin McCann in central defence! The more options we have back there the better.

Give the guy a chance before starting with the sarky comments. It's a squad game nowadays, if you think we're going to bring outstanding young players through to battle every position with a top notch experienced pro then i suggest you start watching Manchester United rather than Hibernian.

Not sure about your bit in bold mate, think he is right central cover. I expect him to be our new right back

Re: Canning Signs

Welcome on board Ian.

He should be judged on performances, not where he came from. He sounds like he was a great prospect pre injury.

What team did we sign Ivan from again? Totally agree on the point on allowing Ian Murray back into midfield, which is most concerning area of the pitch based on recent performances and is IMs best position.

3 points tomorrow and its a better than decent start for The Big Mixuuuuuu!

Mon the Hibs.

As i wrote in another thread somewhere, Canning was loaned out to Peterhead from Ross County about 7-8 years ago. At the time he was a right back but IIRC he has played more as a central defender since joining Gretna.

He scored 9 goals for Ross County in 111 appearances. Decent ratio for a defender even though it was in the first division.

At 27 he is just about at his peak.

As Greenmachine said Donald Park would have a big input in persuading Mixu that this guy is worth a contract. The fact that it is an 18 month one seems to suggest they are convinced the lad is good enough.
