JOHN Collins, the Hibernian manager, is confident Steven Fletcher will put an end to speculation about his future by signing a new contract in the next few days.

Re: Collins is confident Fletcher will extend his stay at Hibs

This is encouraging news, and I think I can see where the thoughts of the club are regarding Steven Fletcher. If he extends his contract by say another year to 2012, it means that Hibs will likely sell him for the full market value in two years time. He will be 22 by then, hopfully a full international player if he continues to progress, and he will leave at exactly the same age as Scott Brown did for a similar amount of money. Both Hibs and the player benefit. I hope he does sign a new contract as this will be the best move forward for both the club and the player.

I will feel sorry for John if Fletch doesn't sign after that.

I could have sworn his agent said something completely different. Surreal.

Not only, but also, the journalist who wrote that is a rabid jambo, a very good friend of the mad giraffe no less.

I wonder if this is some sort of ultimatum from JC to Petrie on this...

It reads to me that he's "confident" that Fletcher will get a new contract, with the unspoken message "or else" appearing to be there to me.

I could be wrong and this is just PR stuff from JC obviously...

He didn't actually. He said they were going nowhere unless we got a ridicilous amount of money for them, when he was pressed about how much that would be he said "£6.5m for them" (which was spun by the Daily Record as Hibs valuing them at £13m combined, the stirring fecks!). After people laughed at that we ended up getting £6.4m...

Re: Collins is confident Fletcher will extend his stay at Hibs

This looks to be very good news for Hibs and Fletcher. He needs to stay and develop and we get to enjoy watching one of the best young talent's in Scotland.

Re: Collins is confident Fletcher will extend his stay at Hibs

In terms of Fletcher staying at Hibs for many years to come this is all a bit meaningless because he will be wanting to move on in 18 months time to two years if not sooner and whether he has a contract to 2011 or 2013 really makes no difference at all.

Hibs will also be wanting to sell him at his peak market value which if he continues to develop at the same rate

is going to happen sooner rather than later and it's not going to be in 2012 or 2013 no matter what any old contract thingy says.

The significance therefore of any contract extention twofold.

Firstly there is personal happiness and job satisfaction of a player who gets £1,200 a week

, scores lots of goals and is more and more becoming the star player on the pitch compared to colleagues around him and in the dressing room who pick up double/triple the wages and contribute very little.

Secondly Hibs get much more flexibility in the timing of the transfer and with BosMan III on the way it may become more significant in terms of years remaining on your contract times basic salary.

Saint Rodney must have baulked at the size of the signing on fee and cut of the future transfer fee but he deserves great credit if he has pulled it off again and a happy and contented Fletcher resigns.

Saint Rodney is getting rather good at these sort of deals.
