Making of Hibernian

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that I'd be able to buy this book (The Making of Hibernian) which I believe is by someone called Lugton, or of a way I'd be able to get access to it? I'm looking to use it in an essay I've got due on the 3rd, and the uni library just doesn't have it.

The question I'm doing is concerned with the role of sport in immigrant (ie Irish) identities in Scotland after 1870 -typically, all the reccommended books are about the old firm, but I'm trying to stay away from that if at all possible, and this was the first text that came to mind.

I'd very much appreciate any help anyone's able to give me with this.

Why oh why do the publishers simply not do a rerun of both the 2nd and 3rd books?

Re: Making of Hibernian

I've got hard backs of volume ii and volume iii, presents from my mum a few christmases back. I had to get a soft back volume i and as the gadgey says above they are available at borders at the fort: I was there last night.

As you say Mark, I'm preplexed why this popular series has never been reprinted.

Marketing opportunity for the club could be there tbh. Why not get them re-printed in soft back to be sold individually for say around £12 a pop each, and get a presentation set of hardbacks for £60 or so all to be sold exclusively at the Club Shop...

I reckon you could punt 500 easily of the special edition one which I make £30k of sales, plus it would get punters in the shop.

I would get them for reading rather than keeping so the softback ones would be what I'd get fwiw, but could see a definite demand for a set in hardback.

Emphasis lies with the publishers and doubt that they would be interested in reprinting less than 5000 copies per volume, I doubt that there is the market for that amount of numbers, after all the real fans have all 3 volumes and all first additions

Might be worth dropping a line to Ian Murray at Archway Books, he has a collection of rare-ish and out of print books. Probably cheaper than using FleaBay

Is 5,000 really round the number needed to get a publisher to print this sort of thing? That surprises me when I see some of the stuff which comes out, and book sales tbh...

The figure may be out but IIRC, it is in the low thousands, bigger publishers will possibly have smaller print run margins, they will have bigger selling authors so can afford to run special low run editions of other books. John Donald was the publisher of MOH but they only have Vol 1 on sale as well, however for those wishing to to get their hands on a vol 2/and or 3 if significant numbers enquire directly they might be prepared to do another run.

Nail on head, 162. Hibs as a club are really, really shite at promoting and capitalising on the playing and cultural / social history......Petrie should be in talks with someone like Hugh Andrew at Birlinn and they could easily commission a fourth and fifth volume to bring us up to present day. I know Lugton is a very hard act to follow but surely he would be willing to act in some sort of consultative capacity ?

Just think, a limited edition boxed set of Vols. 1, 2 & 3 (hardback, natch) at £120 a go, with a "meet the players, past greats & board" book signing in Behind the Goals, fuxake, Petrie would get trampled in the rush.

Don't we have someone at the club to deal with marketing ? Given STF's background, you'd think we would be a lot more on the ball. (No pun intended.)

I was actually more thinking of vanity publishing tbh. You can get print runs of a few hundred books for not a lot of cash per copy. Obviously it would be down to Lugton himself to approve this, but if the club were to pay for the costs and give him a bit of dough (maybe buy his copyright for the rights to the books?) I couldn't see that being a problem tbh...

Hardback Vol. 1 now on Fleabay, opening bid of £40-00.

This is the volume I am missing as I only have it in soft top. Guaranteed it'll go to at least £75-00.
