I thought it might have been because Edinburgh's colours are black and white, either that or it was simply a neutral colour to add on instead of using yellow.

Whichever era the Hibs strips were introduced....the then Hibs chairman was out for a walk and asked the boy who was putting an undercoat of purple on the barriers in the terracing what the colour of Hibs away strip should be.

"Purple" he says....."Flucking purple"

I think you have cracked it

Hibs wore black socks from 1915 to 1938.We also wore black shorts 1895/6.

Yeah my Grandad's Hibs socks in 1936 were green with black stripe in the middle. Think the training jumpers were black as well.

Didn't know that.
First I knew was when we played a friendly against a german team that had this type of scarf, it was in one of hibs programs a few weeks after about us adopting this scarf from them as it became very popular.
Sorry can't remember who it was against or when it was but I think late 80's.
Anybody help or remember this?

You could get the same green, white and black scarf only with purple instead of black. I've still got mine.

We were the first to wear the Green & White.

Not them tramps in the west. We stay Green & White.

However, i had a Green, White & Purple scarf in the early 90's.

Now i'd only wear our colours. Green & White.

Yeah thats right altho I think it was slightly later maybe mid 80s . IIRC there were a fair few punters who wore green white and yellow scarves in the old North Enclosure early 80s days whiich were identical to the scarves worn by the soapies.The black was brought into make us different from them and as has been said above we wore black socks pre war.

I think the purple was firstly introduced by the Hart Board and briefly used for European games in the 70s, the colour being picked to emphasis our scottishness ie purple heather ? Fact it was also Holy Rood High Schools colours and is a prominent colour in the Catholic churches liturgy meant it went down quite well with some East Edinburgh "traditionalists"

Dont do scarfs but like the previous poster id only ever wear green and white.

Edinburgh's colours (and Leith's coincidentally) are Black and White... what are the official colours of Glasgow? (does it have any?)

Glasgow's colours are green and yellow.
