Dean Shiels

Anyone any idea where he was playing?
Anyone any idea how many touches he got of the ball?

Anyone think he deserves a start at any point in the near future?
Probably aye. Some players get away with awful awful performances and people wonder why they are playing, others get away with awful awful performances and people scream about why they aren't playing in the next game...

This has been prompted by the guy behind me criticising Curier whilst going radge at Shiels being substituted btw...

We [Daddy O, Blue toon & I] said as much last night. The only thing in Deans favour from last night was the fact he was playing too deep. The laddie does most of his damage in the box. As you rightly say though some people cannot see past him.

Thought Curier played reasonably well

Re: Dean Shiels

Deano or Lewis can have no complaints about being substituted at half time. A miserable performance but it could have been any one of the other 9 tbh.

I do wonder though if Deano is playing in a position where he wants to play?

He really could IMO be a fantastic poacher for us up front...

I reckon Deano is a similar type to Derek Riordan and possibly even possesses similar natural abilities. But the problem is can we afford a Riordan-type "luxury" in our side? I don't think that type of player fits in with JC's plans. Deano has become a talismanic character of late but has not come up with the goods when given a start in the side this season. I too would love to see him starting up front with the likes of Curier or Fletcher. But there's a whole season of tinkering to look forward to so we might yet get to see it.

Re: Dean Shiels

i like deano. but why play him in midfeild? he is a striker, a poacher (look at sunday) with flether or curior (not seen enough) looks good. just play him up front and murphy at left back.

I echo the sentiments that he shouldn't be played anywhere other than upfront. That goes for Murphy nothing but LB.

Curier was the best of a bad starting bunch last night.

I liked Eddie May... maybe it was goals in key games, or maybe it was his willingness to play hard and try.... no matter how (badly) he was playing

maybe one of two of our prima donnas could take a bit of his attitude into their game

Dean shouts about not getting a chance, but in 45 minutes he did little of note to make his starting place a regular thing... the guy has the talent... why he can't produce it over a normal 90 min spell is beyond me

Re: Dean Shiels

Was Deano not playing behind the strikers the other night no? Dont think that suits us though Motherwell were ripping us to shreds once they got the ball in the midfield. Every attack i thought they were going to score. Stevenson is not a left back in that team either. We have the best left back in the country and we are using him as a midfielder, surely thats no right, granted it paid of against Celtic for a half but hes a left back, lets play him there, Lewis got MOM in a cup final, surely that shows where he should be starting. Saying that I would drop both him and Deano on Saturday, JC cant continue to keep hooking the lad after 30 minutes and 45 minutes, it doesnt help the team and it doesnt help his confidence. Maybe giving him a wee time out will do him the world of good and make him realise that he is not a first team regular. For Deano I have always seen him as a left winger, Think he has the trickery to beat players with a good shot. Would also start Morais on the right. With Fletcher and Courier up front, which is harsh on Donaldson but Fletch is on fire at the moment.

Green Sleeves is on the way to a first team debut
Re: Dean Shiels

Deano was in the right position to get us the late winner and all three points against Celtic. And he was there to get us the late equaliser and a share of the points against Aberdeen. He's not done so good in the two cup matches, admittedly, but he's done alright when he's had the chance in the league.

Re: Dean Shiels

Dean looks ok in a forward position, has proved he's a clinical finisher. Where Deano fails is the midfield, he is slow tracking back and leaves a big hole in front of the full back. Maybe his best position is laying of a player like Courier, a good penalty box player and thereabouts. Can lose the ball when in possession too often. Got to let the player play in his best position to properly evaluate. Most were i sat knew he wouldn't appear second half. I like the laddie and hope JC and he get it right soon.

I agree with that idea. Deano can play a few positions but I'd like to see him up front with the big man. He can defo finish, we've seen it many times. He is very guilty of losing possession though and as Daddy'O says, losing it far up the park is much less costly than in the midfield.
