In Praise of Alex Miller
Plenty of people on this forum (hands up, me included on occasions) may have had not so nice things to say about Alex Miller in one context or another, so it is only fair I think, that when a positive comment is called for, it is given at least equal air time.
Mr Miller, quietly and without seeking any publicity at all, responded to a request from me to donate a Liverpool jersey, which would go to auction here in Australia, with all proceeds going to the OZ branch's plan for the Pat Stanton tour of Australia in early 2009. The auction is to be held in Melbourne on 24 November. I know that people in the football industry are inundated with such requests, and never really expected Alex to respond - but he did, and what a response it was! Apart from a very nice letter praising Pat Stanton, he sent a Liverpool jersey..but not just any Liverpool jersey........ He sent Steve Gerrard's jersey, arranging for Gerrard to sign it on the back, and the entire Liverpool first team squad to sign it on the front. The OZ branch now have a very auctionable item. As I say, Alex Miller has come in for a fair bit of criticism over the years from certain sections of the Hibs support, but whatever some may have thought about his reign, I think it is only fair that his unselfish and much appreciated effort be recognised. He could have simply ignored the request - that fact that he didn't, and personally went to the time, trouble and expense to help us, possibly shows a side of the man that many of us have never seen before. The Australia Branch is indebted to him, and judging by his letter he certainly still has a high degree of affection for the HIbs, not to mention Pat Stanton. Well done Alex!
