SPL under 21 rule
should the SPL demand more young talent?
i think that the under "21" rule is fantastic. it seems to be the way with so may big clubs these days, that to play trophy winning football (note i said trophy winning and not entertaining), is to bring in mult-i million pound players from foreign countries, with no understanding of "scottish" football. if you take a good look at "scottish" football, you can see that the winning teams tend to be, on every other day rangers, celtic and now recently, hearts. then, if you break down those winning teams, what is it you're left with? a team of 7 over rated foriegn players, 1 talented under 25 scottish player who should be playing in the premier league), topped up with 3 under 21 players (who maybe score or prevented a few goals against he old firm the season before, of which have been plucked from the likes of hibs, aberdeen or kilmarnock. larger teams, mainly the old firm, complain about the spl not being competitive. my opinion, (and i agree that it may be influenced due to my preferences), is this. Celtic complain about there never being any competition within the spl. almost every football suporter i speak to has nothing but praise for players like derek rhiordan, scott brown, steven whittaker and pretty much most of the young players at hibs. i mention hibs because they are the biggest victims in this scenario. rangers supporters i raised this point with, agreed that steven whittaker was one of the most reliable right backs in scotland (also that he should be playing for scotland).but, celtic and rangers do go on about the lack of challengers within the spl, and each season, they insist on buying the most talented players from each team outwith the three richest teams in the league, thus reducing the strenght of each competitive team each season. For a league to be competitive, the spl has to establish a rule that requires a club that pays a fee for a player under 21, from another scottish club, to field that player something in the range of 15-20 games per season. this would justify the transfer. Being a hibs supporter, i do respect the young players that decide to up and leave for higher wages. as long as the do it correctly. if they agree a transfer when the are in contract, which brings the club a respectable sum of money.in my opinion, who wouldn't move to another employer to do the same job but get paid the 4 times the salary? i work for sky and i know if i got offered a job with either the bbc or virgin media, in the the customer services call centre, but with a 3-4 time salary increase, you would have to question my satity if i dint switch. these young guys are no diffirent. anyway, to sumerise my point about the under "21" rule, if you go back to each clubs roots, you will see that each club represents there local community. why should that change just because our more modern clubs have became more lucrative. each club should have to install some kind of identity from its surroundings. on match day, it would be great to be entertained by a healthy mixture of eurpean and scottish players. if the board members of the spl and fifa can get it right, every saturday, we woul be able to see our international team develop at club level, into a strong competitive nation. a nation of taletned players that are picking up skills and tricks from the continent every saturday from the experienced foriegn players within their local team they support and love. i would love it if the minimum foriegn player rule demaned an maximum of 3 on any given match day. personally i would like to see the scottish premier league being played by scottish players. ( and im not meaning that in a racist way, if you know what i mean) if you disagree, i would love to here why... To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. Re: SPL under 21 rule
There used to be a three foreigners rule in the European competitions.. It used to really screw up Rangers chances as they were fielding a squad of non-Scots on Saturdays and had a vastly different side to play for them in the EC. It wasn't known as the "3 foreigners" rule to Rangers it was the "8 huddies" rule. Needless to say they did not experience their most successful seasons abroad while this policy was in place.

Re: SPL under 21 rule
When he's looking at the best young players to cherry-pick from Hibs, Killie and so on - I dont see Walter complaining about other teams developing under 21 players for him.
The fact that Whitty, Brown, Riordan, Caldwell and Thomson were all over or nearly 21 when they moved west shows that they were signed because of their quality and not the fact they were youngsters. But then this is the same man who advised Brown, Whitty and Thomson to stay and develop at Hibs when he was Scotland manager, then promptly made for bids for them when he had the cash. He's also the guy who showed a complete lack of loyalty to Scotland when he ran off for the Ibrox job. Pay this dour-faced, back-stabber no attention.
