I Didn't Join Hibs Rebels Because I'd Nowt Bad To Say About Boss Says Kevin Mccann

EASTER Road rookie Kevin McCann has packed more into his first season than most senior pros see in a lifetime in the game.

The Hibs starlet has been part of a rollercoaster campaign that's included the arrival of a new manager, a cup win and a player revolt.

McCann has been a bemused spectator watching the Easter Road drama unfold and has lifted the lid on witnessing the 'ugly' side of the game when boss John Collins faced a dressing-room rebellion.

The 19-year-old was one of only a few first-teamplayers NOT to attend the infamous meeting between Hibees chief Rod Petrie and the majority of Collins' squad.

In April the rebel gang tried to get their gaffer the bullet behind his back but failed largely due to Collins' popularity with Hibs fans.

McCann, who has been excellent in his first season, refused to be part of the mutiny and backed his boss to the hilt. He believes he has learned from senior players' mistakes and revealed how he LAUGHED when he read about some of the accusations thrown at his gaffer.

The full-back insists every young player at Easter Road supports Collins' methods and vowed to pay their gaffer back for the faith he's shown in them.

Ahead of Hibs' final game of the season against Celtic today, McCann said: "I have witnessed the good, bad and ugly sides of football this term.

"After winning the CIS Cup, we've been on a bit of a downer and haven't performed as well as we would have liked.

"The gaffer has learned more since the cup final than he did before it.

"The ugly side of my season has been the well-publicised meeting between the players and Rod - even though I wasn't involved in it.

"I didn't like seeing the manager's name in the papers for that kind of thing because he's been really good with me since he arrived in October.

"The boss taught me a lot and I'm becoming a better player under his wing - he is teaching me good habits.

"It wasn't pleasant to read the stuff that was written about him.

"All the young boys feel the same way because he's the one who has given us a chance this season.

"The manager gave me a shot and put me in the limelight - hopefully I can repay him.

"All the youngsters are now pushing in the same direction to take the club forward. We all want to learn from him. I could insist it wasn't difficult before the cup semifinal loss to Dunfermline - but it was.

"We should have been focussing on the big game but it became difficult when

s were outside our stadium every day.

"In a perverse way, though, the situation has perhaps been a good learning curve for me.

"I knew the meeting was taking place but I stayed away from it, I would never go against the gaffer.

"I didn't feel any pressure to go along. We were left to make our own judgment.

"But I wasn't involved because I didn't have anything to say.

"I read stuff in the papers and was laughing about it, thinking 'that's not right'."

McCann has all the attributes to develop into a top player and is arguably the best of Hibs' new breed of kids.

He wants Collins to stick with them next season and is confident the current batch of youngsters can be like Sir Alex Ferguson's famous Old Trafford crop that included Gary Neville, David Beckham and Paul Scholes.

Kev said: "I'm confident in my ability and my mentality is that I need to be the best. If you look at that famous Man U team who came through together you have to learn from what they achieved.

"When you watched them, they stuck up for each other.

"At Hibs the young guys go to the gym and push each other on.

"If any of us have a bad game, one of the other lads will phone to cheer you up.

"That's the type of group we are and hopefully we'll go on to do as well as that Old Trafford team."

McCann has flitted between rightback and midfield since he broke into Collins' squad and he's happy to be versatile - as long as he plays. He said: "I have played in defence for most of my career but have been moved to almost EVERY position for Hibs at some point.

"It's important to learn different roles and if the manager tries me in new slots, I'm happy to learn.

"Look at all the top players - they can play in more than one position.

"Even Steven Gerrard had to play at right-back in extra-time at the Champions League Final against Milan and was unbelievable.

"If you want to make it to the top that's the way you need to be."

The Glasgow-born teenager looks a certainty to be in Archie Gemmill's Scotland Under-20 squad jetting off to Canada's World Cup next month.

But Collins has already voiced his concerns over so many Hibs players being involved.

Kevin said: "I don't know what the manager's thoughts will be about going to Canada - it's up to him to decide.

"It would be tough to miss out because a World Cup is massive.

"It's an honour to play for Scotland but Hibs pay my wages and it's the gaffer's decision."

This is good to read. Some of the older players need to take a leaf from his book.

Sounds like a very level-headed young man. He certainly looks the part on the park too and I hope to see much more of him next season.

This is another example of how important it is for Hibs to turn over a new crop of players as quickly as possible.

Whether it is young players coming through or new players coming in doesn't really matter though the preference would be for some experienced pro's.

JC has to get in more of his own players in place who owe their loyalty and (wage bracket

This is usually quite a difficult task to achieve as most clubs are skint and don't have any money but Hibs have a staggering £8million of loose change
