I don't know why, but it suddenly occurred to me this evening, as I was sitting daydreaming when I should have been concentrating on the mundane, repetitive cold calls I make in my second job. Possibly someone else discerned this very simple and obvious fact earlier, for example at 4.45 pm on Sunday March 18th, but I didn't and I cannot recall it being mentioned on this site or in the general media. I refer, of course, to the self-evident fact that our achievement in winning this season's League Cup was actually the first time since 1902 that we have won a cup in the second half of the season (our successful campaigns of 1972-73 and 1991-92 culminated in open-top buses in December and October, respectively). Is this significant? Does it really matter, given that it's the same 'lesser' cup tournament we'd won as recently as 15 seasons ago, rather than the 'big' cup, that we last won 105 seasons ago?

I think it does, I think in trophy winning terms it is the Kellogg's Bran Flakes of trophy successes, i.e. it's a step in the right direction.

What do the rest of you think? I think it's a good indicator that maybe next year we will finally end the Scottish Cup drought.

Mind you, I've been saying that since the year of George Orwell.

Maybe we're getting better at these 2nd half of the season finals. Not only have we lost the Scottish Cup finals, we also lost 2nd half of season finals in the League Cup against Livingston 3 years ago and 6-2 against Celtic in April 1969 after the Hampden fire.

The 6-2 final in 1969, re the Hampden fire - there was a fire at Ibrox the following night.
