Do You Remember..........
Saturday 28 April 1990? Seventeen long years ago today? Not that we knew it at the time but it was Maggie Thatcher's last spring as Prime Minister, The Stone Roses and The Happy Mondays were at their zenith and baggy was in. I was an eighteen year old sixth former, about to sit my A levels. Which a certain DEID fat Tory bastard would interrupt. Anyway, Hibs were still in with a chance of the last place in Europe and were at home to bottom team Dundee, surely we'd get the necessary two points? Alas, we didn't, it finished 1-1. I'm sorry but I can't remember the scoring sequence but I think we were a goal down and that either Pat McGinlay or Keith Houchen equalised. I may be talking shite though; it's hardly unknown. However, of greater significance is that this was JC's last home game (it may actually have been his last game, he may not have appeared at EEP the following week for the disappointing 1-1 draw that ensured no European football would be played at ER during 1990-91) and he missed a penalty in the last minute. Ifs and buts and maybes. We've spoken a lot about them since Tuesday night. I always think Ruud Gullit has the right attitude when it comes to discussing pointless imponderables; I read an interview with him once and in it he was quoted as saying that in Holland they have a deep and profound saying which basically states the quite simple fact that 'if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle'. You're not wrong. However, if that had gone in and we'd qualified for Europe the extra revenue may even have eased the club's parlous pecuniary state. It would certainly have helped during that holocaust of a season that was 1990-91. A season, I personally, regard as being more depressing than our relegation year of 1997-98. I mean, at least during 1997-98 there were some highlights, i.e. Chico's winner against the tims (on Larsson's debut), Chico and Pat McGinlay baith scoring from their own half (at different ends) in the space of eight days, being top of the league til late September and, of course, phucking up hertz' title chances. During 1990-91 we didn't score more than one goal in a league game until Sat March 2nd (4-3 against St Mirren). In fact, there were only another two game when we actually scored more than once (2-4 v sheep, 3oth March and 3-0 v Pars, 4th May). I think I'm right in saying that in 36 league matches we averaged two goals every three games, i.e. we only phuckin' scored 24 goals.
Anyway, back to 17 years ago today, I wore that season's inaugural Planet Saturn badge Frank Graham adidas Hibs top (smart as phuck, man) to Ninian Park where City drew 3-3 with relegation rivals Fulham. I also got cautioned by one of South Wales' finest for calling the ref an 'English bastard'! There used to be another guy who stood on the Bob Bank in those days with that season's Hibs top on, his name is Mike Pearce and apparently he'd moved to Embra with work and, showing good taste, had become a Hibbie (presumably on a second team basis, like I am with the Bluebirds). He used to sponsor a player in the programme under the title of 'Edinburgh Bluebirds'. I wonder what happened to him.

Re: Do You Remember..........
Damn right Colin. It's got the same sort of collar as the 1985-86 Insave one, as worn in the Skol Cup final against the sheep. Those adidas Hibs strips were cool as phuck. Having said that, my personal favourite Hibs top ever is the round coloured top we sported during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, i.e. the inaugural one with the current club crest. Which hopefully we won't change. I mean, I'd have to get another tattoo then and I'm running out of space as it is!

Re: Do You Remember..........
The very same ma man. It always makes me think of Paco Luna's face, contorted with joy after putting us 2 up in the Athens game. It's a disappointment that still lingers with us all that his header in the last minute so narrowly glided past the near post. We were sat in the West Lower that night (Craven's idea) and I'll admit I wished we'd stuck to our guns and stood on the terracing - their Bounce was tremendous. Especially those two oh-so-emotional renditions of 'Sunshine on Leith'. They were only bettered at the CIS Cup Final. Digressing slightly, a fortnight later my Mum n Dad were in Rome to celebrate their 'Ruby, Ruby, Ruby' wedding anniversary and, of course, Scotland had played in Bari during the week, anyway, they bumped into a couple of Aberdeen fans who, upon hearing ma Dad was a Hibbie (well, it's the first thing you tell any new acquaintance isn't it, it's your whole phuckin' identity, man), spoke enthusiastically of how impressed they'd been by the emotional outpouring of passion that song engendered at the Cup Final. They remarked that there isn't a team, anywhere, who've got a song to rival it.
I'm getting emotional just typing this. Big soppy poof that I am.
