Ben Todd - Mascot

There is a story in todays Daily Record about a wee boy called Ben Todd who has been battling Leukeamia. He is to be our mascot at the Derby on Sunday. If ever a mascot deserved a huge cheer this one does.

Good Luck Ben, I'm sure your parents must be very proud of you!

Edit - I cant get the link to work for some reason but its in the online version of the record - just search for Ben Todd.

Re: Ben Todd - Mascot

Absolutely, Mama Cass. Just read the story masel. Makes you realise how lucky you are.

That result on the 18th was so special for all of us but for that wee laddie it must have really meant something.

Here's hoping the boys make his day that little bit extra special with a famous win!

This is my mum's friend's wee boy. He had had a really terrible time over the last few years. Wee soul.

The words here..........

30 March 2007
THE BOY WHO BEAT CANCER THREE TIMES
By Lisa Adams
BEN TODD watched his football heroes from his hospital bed during a battle with leukaemia that lasted half his young life.

Now the 10-year-old will finally get a chance to meet those Hibs players when he pulls on a much-loved green shirt and leads the team out at Sunday's Edinburgh derby with Hearts.

Ben, of Penicuik, is counting down the hours before his taste of the big time as a mascot at Easter Road.

He dreams of becoming a professional player. So it's hard to believe that before Christmas he was given just months to live.

But a life-saving bone marrow transplant and a love for the beautiful game gave Ben the strength to beat the aggressive disease not once but three times.

"I've always loved football," says Ben. "But I like Hibs' Scott Brown the best. I love that he can run up the park without losing the ball and he can score a lot of goals. I like his energy. I would love to meet him."

Now Ben's courage has been recognised with a nomination as a Little Hero in the Daily Record Our Heroes awards. For his mum Dawn, 38, and dad Gordon, 44, it's just another achievement in their remarkable son's life.

"I am so proud of Ben," says Dawn. "Through all this he has only really cried twice. Sometimes he'd even hide away in the toilet so I didn't notice he'd been sick.

"He said he didn't want to worry me."

Ben was five and had just started at Cornbank primary school when he complained of feeling constantly tired and was regularly sick.

At first his GP dismissed the symptoms as just a virus but Dawn could tell it was more than that.

Finally, on Easter Sunday 2002, after a weekend of Ben being particularly unwell, she took him straight up to the Sick Children's Hospital in Edinburgh.

Blood tests came back clear, but a scan revealed Ben had what doctors suspected was a tumour near his appendix. Further tests showed that it was actually a mass of leukaemic cells and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was diagnosed.

Chemotherapy started immediately, while Dawn juggled long hours at the hospital with caring for her other children, Sam, now 16, and Jack, 13. Treatment seemed to work and Ben went into remission.

But in November 2004 his parents' worst fears were confirmed when tests showed the leukaemia was back.

After more gruelling treatment Ben was again cancer-free. But two years later, on a summer holiday in Majorca, he started being sick again. They'd chosen Majorca for a rejuvenating break to help the family get back to normal. Instead they were contemplating the unthinkable: that their son could die this time.

Dawn says: "Every time something nice happened to our family something bad happened. You ended up scared even to hope. Our luck has just been horrendous."

Doctors feared they were running out of options and Ben urgently needed a bone marrow transplant before it was too late to save him. Without it they feared they could only keep him alive for six months.

The hunt was on for a match. With no one in Ben's family compatible, they could only rely on marrow from a stranger.

After three months of searching by the Anthony Nolan Trust a donor was found and Ben received a transplant on December 1 last year.

Dawn says: "My son's life was in the hands of a stranger. Life is precious and the people who volunteer to be bone marrow donors to save my son and the thousands of other children like him are the most precious of all."

Just hours after the transplant Ben was kicking a football around in his ward. After five weeks he was well enough to go home.

Now he is back at school and even playing again for the junior Inch Colts football club.

He was nominated for the Hero award by Allan Johnston, the Anthony Nolan Trust regional fundraising manager.

Allan says: "We are delighted Ben is doing so well. It is amazing a complete stranger has given Ben a new chance of life. But the stark reality is that there are 7000 other patients worldwide who are not as fortunate as Ben, waiting to find a suitable donor. For thousands of patients a bone marrow transplant is their only chance of a cure."
