The sight of the massed ranks of Hibs supporters, scarves aloft, crooning that non-sectarian, geographical, global-warming-free lullaby ‘Sunshine on Leith’ plucked at her heart strings, and to her great surprise, since she wouldn’t know Easter Road from Easter Island, down the cheeks the tears started to roll. Such mass emotion, as displayed by the victors, was obviously highly contagious since it was packaged in such a civilised, melodious manner in distinct contrast to some of the triumphalist crudities normally associated with the terracings. Celtic certainly have their stirring ‘Never Walk Alone’ anthem. But that has been borrowed from Broadway via Merseyside who got their hands on it first. Rangers in their attempt to control the image, tried the Motown-Tin Pan Alley hybrid, ‘Simply The Best’ only to have it prostituted with a sectarian sting in the tail. But what Hibs have is the original home-grown product, that in a way reflects in musical terms what the club is itself. It speaks of optimism in an age when a club of their sort could be trodden over by those with greater financial muscle. It has echoes of fidelity which is what a club, under duress too often,has needed to survive. Perhaps David Taylor, off to UEFA, could package the Hampden scenes and make of it a demonstration DVD of how football ought to be celebrated throughout the continent. It is too much to hope that the most bigoted yobs would pay much attention. But since I believe that Taylor’s appointment was one of the strangest since Caligula made his horse a senator in Rome , I nevertheless believe if he could export these scenes to effect, he would go down in history as ‘ David, The Tear-Jerker’. Football in Scotland is ridiculously poor value for money.We dont want to sit down. We dont want to be treated like scum by the stewards. We dont want to eat over-priced reheated stale pies and pay £2 quid for a bit of powder and warm water in a tiny cup. We dont want to sit behind pillars (Well at certain grounds it's ok). We dont want to watch guys who cant control a football. But that's what we get........ |
