Decal Joe has a spectacular aura about
Playing a Trialist!

Obviously the behind closed doors game against Sunderland revealed to the Management Team that the two French Players we had on trial did not fit in to the plans of the Club. I would think that a game scenario is the only 'real' opportunity to assess certain qualities of a player, although training sessions will also show a lot.

With this in mind, do you think there is any chance that Tomas Sowunmi (if JC is interested in him!) may play today against Motherwell as a 'Trialist'?

I'm not sure he would be allowed to play DJ unless of course he signed a short term contract.

In any case I would stick with Fletch and Benji up front today.

I wasn't sure about that either! you often see 'A.Trialist' appearing as a score on the Vidi printer and in match reports for competitive matches and obviously we've used them in recent times (pre season etc) but wasn't sure about in a league match.

I agree that sticking with Benji and Fletch would probably suit todays game, I just wondered if JC might see the benefit of trying the guy (possibly as a sub!) in todays fixture.

Re: Playing a Trialist!

I thought all players playing in official matches for eg, scottish cup, league, had to be under a professional contract. I think the only way you are allowed to play them is if they are on a week contract minimum is it not? Could be wrong, but you hear some players are on that type of contract.

You see it all the time in lower scottish league games so it must be possible.

Could that maybe be a seperate rule for the SFL though. Cause if you put it this way, the following scenario could happen. Rangers or celtic if they really wanted to win a game for whatever reason, could try to bring (with some helping money behind the scenes) in some superstars, i know its an exageration but if thats the rule then it could happen. Maybe your allowed to register them as a trialist if they didnt have a club all season maybe?

I would imagine the rule allows trialists so long as they arent signed to another club

to stop this kind of thing happening (in competitive games I mean), just a guess.

The rules must have changed then.

October/Novemberish 1996 - Jock Scott's short reign - anyone remember the Finnish centre back Jari Rippa doing a turn for us in a Tynecastle derby? Looking a decent enough player but Jocky thought otherwise. He played as "Trialist".

A. Trialist has scored for Gretna today. What a nice sunset there is tonight.

Re: Playing a Trialist!

Trialists cannot be fielded in top-level competitions. However, even if they could be the SPL rules prohibit it as well. And yes, the sunset behind the East Stand was very nice.
