For the avoidance of doubt, anything stated in the above post is written without prejudice; is probably completely uninformed opinion, and possibly just a figment of my imagination. Readers should either ignore, treat with contempt, or simply accept the spirit it is written in, without recourse to huffy replies, legal action or threats of violence.

Re: hibs games on xmas days

yep, I was at the hun game. All over them for 89 minutes and they scored about 10 secs from the end then started to sing easy..easy. Totally heart breaking.

I think that was our last christmas day fixture. Saturday 25th Dec 1971. Colin Stein scored 15 seconds from the end. Just looked out the programme from that day. Hibs had played 16 games, won 10 drawn 3 and lost 3 sitting third in the league six points behind leaders Celtic. Team that day was: Herriot, Brownlie, Schaedler, McEwan, Stanton, Blackley, Edwards, Hamilton, O'Rourke, Cropley and Duncan. Sub was Hazel.

Re: hibs games on xmas days

It was a Christmas Day match in 1909 when Hibs played Partick Thistle at Firhill on a frostbound pitch and goalkeeper Jimmy Main received fatal stomach injuries following a collision with a Thistle player. He died 4 days later.

It is amazing how settled the Hibs side was under ned...........Until Brownlie's leg break and Edwards absence cost us the following season.....Riding high then after a famous 0-7 win against a pub team.

Re: hibs games on xmas days

Think Jimmy Main was a full back. He is buried in West Calder.A fairly big Celtic cross marks the spot, with IIRC,an inscription along the lines of "erected by Hibernian FC",together with the date.

Aye you're right enough, he was a full back. I was thinking about John Thomson when I was writing that!

Re: hibs games on xmas days

untill the late 60s Christmas wasn't really that big a holiday in Scotland

while the English celebrated Christmas, we had the big celebration at New Year

thus Jan 2nd was always a holiday in Scotland , while it never has been in England

so if Dec 25th was a saturday, there was football

True, in fact I seem to recall January 1 not being a Bank Holiday in England either up to the seventies.
