Wee Jay away to Dundee

DUNDEE today signed Jay Shields on a three month loan from Hibernian, the midfielder has started 5 times for the Hibees this season three of them in the League and the other two in the league cup. He has played over 30 games in his career and is nearly 22 years old. He played in 20 games for the Edinburgh side.

Jay has been out on loan before, when he went to Berwick Rangers and at his time there, he player 12 games. Jay is a right midfielder but also plays full back and he is likely to be in the squad to travel to Perth. He moved to Hibs in December 2003.

His brother, Dene Shields plays for Gretna and although he is not a regular starter for the Black & Whites, there is still a chance they the brothers may play against each other at Raydale Park on the 30th December.

Will be good for him getting more first team football, but does leave us low on cover at RB. Can we recall him at any time?

Good stuff.

I like the cut of his jib, and some regular games will only help him.

Good luck Jay.

Maybe this is him lining up McNamara now. Or even playing a 3-5-2 with jones, murphy and martis at the back with witty in midfield ?

Re: Wee Jay away tae Dundee

Stevenson plays for right back in the reserves usually; and I'm sure Hogg could do a job there too. Or, worst comes to worst, play 3 at the back with 2 holding midfielders in a 3-5-2 or 3-1-4-1-1 formation. But you're right, being at Berwick helped Jay a lot before he was needed in the spring and this is another step up for him - Notman and McDonald are undergoing same process (well OK not Notman now cos he broke his leg).

I never understood why we didn't send Konte out on loan for 3 months.

Re: Wee Jay away tae Dundee

Dundee have got a good one there. Wee Jay will come on leaps and bounds getting regular first team games.

3 months is significant tho, with no present cover for Whits.

Which is why I'm hoping/looking forward to seeing Jackie Mac arrive next month...

Yessssss!!!

Re: Wee Jay away tae Dundee

We do have enough players in our team to cover in that position in Hogg and Stevenson, who are two very good players, we dont need to waste our money on Jakie Mac....we have got the players in our squad to use as cover, Sheilds is a good player and maybe JC should not of let him go but i'm sure this will all be a learning experience for Jay and he will come back a better player.

We need experienced players in the team who are leaders, and Jackie Mac would be a tremendous signing IMO. I don't think it will happen because of the drop in wages, but it would be some scoop if we were to get him. The only worry would be his injury flaring up again.

Re: Jay Shields, he is a tough wee competitor but he is very limited as a player. That's twice now he has been loaned out by two different managers. I think there must be a possibility that he may end up at somewhere like Dens Park on a permanent basis.

Re: Wee Jay away tae Dundee

The "loan scheme" clearly has merits in that fringe players get games where otherwise they might not.

Why else would Lithuanian giants FC Kaunas lend so many players out to lesser teams.

Shields inst the best passer of the ball but he makes his priority defending and does it well imo. Could always rely on him when he was needed and never gave less than 100%. Is a good player to have as backup to Whittaker and I hope he comes back.

By coincidence, Dundee defender Calum McDonald turned out at right back for Peterhead today at the start of a similar loan period - not sure of the thinking behind such a move

Well beaten by Ayr Utd who featured Ally Brown in goal.

Re: Wee Jat away to Dundee

The transfer window only applies to top divisions. (Although the Premiership has refused to ratify it so they can transfer domestically anytime). The SFL chose voluntarily to recognise it, however they (a) allow loans at any time upon approval by a panel, and (b) allow free transfers at any time where there is no conflict of interest, advantage etc. and since hardly ANY players in the SFL move for cash payments, in reality there is no transfer window to speak of. So Jay may be already at Dundee until say the end of February: does anyone know the exact dates?
