Scottish Cup Draw

come ahead ya kants The draw for the third-round of the Scottish Cup takes place on Saturday (Dec 9), with Hibs hoping to perform at least as well as last season when they reached the semi-final. Edinburgh-rivals Hearts won the semi-final 4-0 before scraping a win on penalties against Second Division champions Gretna in the final. Given that Hibs are currently fourth in the SPL, can move second if they beat Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday, and have already reached the semi-final of the CIS Insurance Cup, a good Scottish Cup run would make an already good season even better. The draw will take place shortly after 5pm, after the second-round matches have been played. There will be at least one team from outside the SPL and SFL in the third-round as Deveronvale take on Fraserburgh. The draw, which will be held at the Meadowbank Stadium, will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland television and radio. Selected numbers 1 - Aberdeen 6 - Celtic 9 - Deveronvale or Fraserburgh 16 - Gretna 18 - Hearts 19 - Hibernian 28 - Rangers

Fraserburgh at the wonderful Bellslea Park would do me fine thanks - 20 minutes there and 20 minutes back. Or even Deveronvale (an hour each way) where the legendary Des Bremner and Jim Leighton started out.

I'd take Edinburgh City at Meadowbank any day. Be nice to have an 'alternative' Edinburgh Derby. That said as I'm a student it would have to be Edinburgh University v Hibs. What a tie that would be!! Although that said, Edinburgh University v Hearts would be best of all - imagine the international humilitation of being stuffed by a load of second year biochemistry undergraduates (and believe me, on their day the uni could - some of our players are almost full time, and could give any SFL side bar maybe 6 or 7 First Division a game). Leaving aside ties involving non-leaguers, a side like Airdrie United or Stranraer/Forfar at home would be good. Bit like Arbroath last year, thrash them but need to try reasonably hard to do so.

Some minnow in the Round of 32, thrash them Some lower league side in the Round of 16 (Livingston again anyone?), thrash them Some decent side in the Round of 8 (Gretna or Dunfermline or Motherwell again anyone?), thrash them Hearts in the Semi-Final, thrash them Rangers in the Final, toy with them 1-0 up at half-time, then thrash them in the second half |

Berwick are one of my three teams (with Hibs and Raith......don't ask). Home tie against Arbroath tommorrow, after a good (unexpected) win at East Fife. I think it will be very close, could go either way (a replay possible) as both are very similar standard. Berwick could do with the money from a big tie in the Third Round, plus there's always a possibility of a shock - remember a few years back in 2002? The game was supposed to be Saturday 5th January, postponed by a week the postponed till midweek, Berwick had to one of those huge tents and fans to thaw the pitch.
BERWICK RANGERS: McCulloch; Farrell, Bennett, Murie, Neill; Forrest, Wood, Anthony, McDonald (Bradley); Feroz (Huxford), Smith (Neil) Unused subs: McNicholl, Gillfillan GLASGOW RANGERS: Klos; Wilson, Amoruso, Vidmar, Ross; Hughes, McCann, Latapy, Caniggia (Kanchelkis); Flo(Arveladze), Mols (de Boer) Unused subs: Malcolm, Christiansen Full time score? 0-0!! It was Alex McLeish's sixth game in charge at best...... The replay (which was held 6 days later on a Monday night, after Berwick had played on the Saturday and Rangers hadn't - SPL winter break) ended up 3-0 to Rangers but they didn't score until the 67th minute. THAT is what the Scottish Cup is about. |
