attendances post blobby

it's quite amazing to think that we were averaging at 9,000 a week under the blobster.

had a quick skeg through the herald sport today, and saw that our ave. att. is 14,900!!!!

if we get another decent few in the coming weeks we could see us breaking through the 15,000 mark, which would be some feat given our budget over that last few years!!!

Slow growth with more poeple coming back regularly is better than the flash in the pan over at Tynie. When it goes tit's up over there they will disappear like snow of a dyke.

Snoots - snow off a dyke? Is that some kind of bizarre winter sexual pecadillo favoured by tennis players such as Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova?

Or am I just being a predictably childish ****?

Good stuff, Sam. Considering in the 70's and 80's there would be crowds of 20,000+ and the occasional 30,000+ shows how crowds have at least settled, fans are more regular than they once were.

More to do with Big Good Interesting Steve Archiblad making every player around him look three times as good as they actually were.

... and finally winning a couple of derbies. What a false dawn they turned out to be

Interesting to see how far ahead of the Sheepies our attendances are now, and they in turn are way ahead of the rest. We're now seeing a 3 tier SPL, Old Firm, Euro contenders and also rans, with us the Sheep and (submariners notwithstanding) the Yams starting to occupy the middle ground on a longer term basis.

Also in the 1970's and as far as the late 1980's even an 'average attendance' was skewed one way or the other by the number of Hearts, Celtic, Rangers supporters who may or may not have turned up at the old huge Dunbar away end.

For example in that 1988/89 seaon Hibs played Dundee at home in front of a crowd as low as 5,670 but also played Hearts at home in the same season in front of 27,219. (1-0 to Hibs and can't remember a thing about it )

So is that you finally admitting that the Hibs fans attendance actually did go up when we were relegated? There were no Hearts, Rangers, Celtic or Aberdeen games yet we had one of the best average gates for a decade.

Thank christ its finally clicked, its took years for that to get through to you.

Dunno what you are talking about as Hibs weren't relegated in 1988/89.

I take it you are back on your 1998/99 relegation hobby horse hypotheseis that there was a large increase in Hibs only supporters in the 1st division.?

I've proved many times that actually this was a probably a static Hibs support compared to the previous season with very possibly an increase of a few hundred at the very most and am happy to agree it was a much better support than in the early 1990's.

All of which was very commendable in one of the worst leagues in the world. where teams got lost,(Stranraer) didn't turn up (St Mirren) played in other teams ground (Everyone else) or had 'paper boys' and trialists on the pitch (Stranraer again)

In 1988/89 the Dunbar end held 10,000 plus so it was a huge factor in average attendances, By 1999 it was 3,700 so it wasn't of the same significance and the like for like comparison is from the stadium redevlopment of 1994 ish which is even to anorakish for me.

It shows that we're getting a healthy size fanbase in recent years. I was going to argue that geneally speaking if the team plays positive attacking football the crowds come out, and if we play boring stuff they fall away viz

75-76 (attacking) 13,797
76-77 (boring) 10,303

But 2000-01 proved an anomaly to this theory.

Re the Miller years I tend to agree that the surprising average for 88-89 (13,896) was due to the likes of Stevie Archibald being acquired. Also notice that the Skol/League Cup winning year 91-92 the average was only 9,841 - again surprising.

Other seasons where the emphasis was on attacking football - 97-98 (ok we were relegated but Duffy/Macnamara's team played attractive football (until we hit the slide) 12,029 was the best average for 10 years.

Surprising that the GJP annus mirablis (6-2, cup final, 3rd in the SPL) of 2000-01 only averaged 10,793, I can't fathom that at all.

Also note the downward trend in the crowds during the Blobby seasons, and this was reversed when Mogga re-introduced the football we know and love.

And going by the current trend the future seems bright.

Refuse to beleive that the pars average this amount. Divide it by a factor of 10 and i'll start to take it seriously!!

About 3,000 away fans against Hibs, Hearts, Rangers, and Aberdeen so far out of 8 home games. Take that 12,000 away and you are left with an average of under 5,000.

You can't really compare until teams have played everyone at home imo. Our 3 home games against Dundee Utd, St Mirren, and Dunfermline will see our average gate go down a bit.
