Will We Ever Overcome the Old Firm?

I have been a Hibey since i was a lad the last time we lifted any silverware of worth was 91 so i was too young and nieve to remember it. I've been to Hampden every year for the last 5-6 years to no avail. Will i ever in my lifetime see Hibs at the top of the league, with a stadium that can hold 50-60 thousand supporters about to win the treble for the 5th, 6th, 7th consecutive year in a row? I'm twenty nine now. Being pessimistic and i die at seventy thats fourty one years i'd like to think i would see hibs at least win a couple of league titles and cups in this period.(Edit a few) Oh please oh lord, Amen

Re: Will We Ever Overcome the Old Firm?

The financial position at Rangers is the proverbial house of cards

the Share flotation which the rangers fans applauded as it wiped out the large bulk of the clubs debt was on closer inspection a paper exercise

the debt is still there held by another Murray company to be dealt with "sometime"
as he is now making noises about selling up, that could mean a financial reality check akin to Leeds United

if the Ibrox house of cards (financially anyway) crumbles and they end up paying for years of fiscal madness they could end up imploding along with Hearts and difting along on a shoestring for years (a la Aberdeen

)

so with strong financially management, and increasing fan base if Hibs keep their nerve in 10 years time the "big two" at the top of the Scottish league could easily be Hibs and the Lesser Greens

So in reality we could be competing. The only thing that bothers me (phuckin bugs the sh1t out of me) is that the two Glasgow teams already have large fan bases due to glory hunters betraying their local teams and heading to Castle Greyskull and the Septic Tank every other Saturday. Also that Glasgow is much bigger than Edinburgh nowadays and has a much bigger population so how are we going to match their fanbase?

my first visit to Ibrox the crowd was 11,000 and about 600 of them were Hibees

if Rangers are struggling and Celtic are top or second and in the Champions League I would imagine the same would happen... and given the financial hole David Murray he has dug empty stands are the last thing Rangers need

mind you the above is the most optimistic senario and doesn't factor in vultures cherry picking your best players before you can replace them

Please remember there is a very real possibility that Hibs will be the only senior club in Edinburgh in a few years (months ?) time. I don't expect many yams to come over to the light side, however Edinburgh's population is increasing due to folk coming to work, study etc all the time so surley an ideal way to grow the fanbase.

Just say the yams did go down the tubes, surely a lot of them would bite the bullet and come to ER at least the youngsters would; but then again looking at it from my side i could never see myself pulling on a hearts replica top

That brings forth another question to me, how come Glasgow has become so much bigger than Edinburgh? Is it just that all of the outskirt towns have merged in to the city more quickly than Edinburghs or what? I know Glasgows shipbuilding industry in years gone by and a lot of migrating Irish has a lot to answer for but even still. We are the capital so how come?

to be honest I don't think Hearts will die totally
but I certainly don't think they will exist in their current form

a couple of years at Murrayfield then move out to the council built and owed multi purpose stadium at Sighthill Park (ie the Rugby teams small ground with a running track

the financial reality will be wages akin to Dunfermline or Motherwell so no really decent players playing for them never mind Scottish internationalists
maybe even a name change a la Airdrieonians

Heart of BCCI maybe

A lot of the reason the Weedge grew so big is to do with the trade routes from America. Tobacco and cotton were landed there and processed during the industrial revolution, quite often to be sent straight back over at a profit. All these activities were very labour intensive so poor crofters, Irish etc migrated to Glasgow for employment. Edinburgh has always been a business centre, banking, investment etc. You just don't need as many people for these industries.

This time last year I attended a presentation by a senior bod at the council who stated that the planned (zoned?) new housing along the Leith/Newhaven/Granton area will house a population equivalent to that of Falkirk. Hopefully many of these new residents will end up following the Hibs.

I think we will overcome the OF one day, i also feel we will one day be where the OF wheir a couple years ago, maybe i am just being a we bit ambitious but i always have been and alway will be, i feel that we are now going into a new era of our football club we are in a great financial position and things are only going to get better with the new training facilities which will attract youngsters from all over Britain, i was to young to remember the last time we lifted silverware but i always have believed we will do it and in next years or even in the next few months in the CIS cup i have a great feeling and we have a great team which can win us silverware this season.

In all seriousness, at the moment we cant compete with the old firm just in sheer numbers of support but we all know how "loyal" the huns are and if the situation unfolds as so eloquently foretold by HutchieHibee those ****s will be like snow of a dyke. I have my fingers crossed that it comes to pass. That would only leave the other half of the great unwashed to worry about and given that Yamdom is about to come to an abrupt and I hope tragic end I dont see why we shouldnt at least be the second force in Scottish Football.

the way the economics could line up soon is
Hibee walks up pays 20 quid, due to lack of debts 15 quid goes into player pool
Jambo/Hun walks up plays 20 quid, due to huge debts over 15 quid goes out the club

Hibs could easily start to pass Hearts and close the gap on Rangers even on smaller gates due to the fact the money stays in the club and is not frittered away on paying interest, agents, compensation to your monthly manager etc etc

its not going to be easy, but if we hang in there and keep on the same road it COULD be possible over a 10 to 15 year period

look up the modern history of Charlton (well up to the summer anyway

I actually agree with a bit of that 'we cant compete with the OF' and your right and we have never been able to compete the only way we can compete is if some big rich guy comes into our club and buys us which in all fairness i do not want, as my worry is that it will be someone like Mad Vlad across Edinburgh who is a complete arse who know's nothing about football....but if we continue the way we are going get this training facility up and running and keep the wage cap the way it is then we have such a bright future and maybe the OF will drop in form, or something will happen in the future as you never know with these things as anything can happen in football.

I look at what has been achieved at Villareal CF, Deportivo La Coruņa and AC Chievo and pray that Hibs could emulate the achievements of these teams. Regretably, 30+ years of following Hibs leaves me expecting the worse. It's good to read Mandy's optimism, but the
