alan rough's autobiography

was browsing thorugh this today and read about his time at hibs,

bit of a mixed reaction to his time at hibs, prob due to the fact he was there at one of the worst periods in the clubs history-which i think he takes into consideration

though he did have lots of praise for tommy craig

lays into alex miller big time

Re: alan rough's autobiography

can't remember the exact quotes but

miller made it known from the start he didn't like him,

and roughie reckons he was quite a dour and unapproacable person and this was reflected in the performances at the time

When Alex Miller got the Hibs managers job in December 1986, Roughie was beginning to show signs that he was past his best. He was a tremendous goalkeeper for Hibs from 1982 (when he signed) till about 1985/86. It didn't take Miller long to buy Andy Goram from Oldham Athletic for about £350,000. Basically, Roughie's time was up at Hibs at that point. I remember Miller being heavily criticised at the time for spending so much money on a goalkeeper when everyone thought he should have been signing a striker. Ironic that Miller had just signed one of the greatest goalkeepers Hibs have ever had.

Miller certainly had his faults. I would agree with Roughie about him being dour and unapproachable. I chatted with him a few times at various do's during his time with us and he was certainly honest if a bit over-aggressive. He didn't like people disagreeing with him that was for sure. I think he worked hard for Hibs, but he was a square peg in a round hole at Easter Road and was there far too long. I think he looked upon our Skol Cup triumph as more of a personal milestone for him rather than a great achievement by the team for the supporters.

On his plus side, With one or two exceptions, his signings were mainly excellent. Most of them improved the team, and he deserves credit for that.

Re: alan rough's autobiography

I thought at the time Rough had a point as he was still regarded as the second best goalkeeper in Scotland at the time behind Leighton but just ahead of a young Andy Goram.

I'm sure Rough was still Hibs number one when at Cardiff in 1986, in the World Cup decider the night the great Jock Stein died he replaced Leighton in goals at half time. Leighton had lost a contact lens in the first half and unbelievably didn't have any spares which just couldn't have helped Jock Steins heart condition.

Players don't like being told that their number is up so it sounds like Roughie is getting a wee bit of revenge in on old Mr Dour Face who was ultimately proved completley right in moving him on.

bit of a no brainer. goram was the best in europe on his day. roughie wasn't even the best in scotland.

Re: alan rough's autobiography

I had a quick scan through it in Borders (As you do..)

Roughie certainly gets torn into Miller. It appears he has a go at his man management more than anything else.

I remember Roughie having an unbelievable game at Ibrox with Miller the then manager and in the book Roughie mentions that there was little 'Well Done'.

As a young laddie i thought Roughie was a tremendous keeper for Hibs.

He gave great service and saved us many points. He was given no testimonial (although it was promised) and left the club owed money but was so desparate to escape Miller.

Thanks to Pat Stanton signing Roughie that we stayed in the Premier Division from 82 -86, whereas had we a lesser goallie we'd have been relegated, no doubt about that.
IMO Leighton shades it over Goram. Another inspired signing by Lexo , credit where it's due.

added to his miserableness was his ability to ruin good young prospects

for much of the Miller era not only went home and away but to most home reserve matches

you would see a good youngster get so far, then when Miller got to grips "coaching" them they went to pieces a la Tortolano...

I no longer enjoy watching any Liverpool game on the telly cos you know in a matter of time it will go onto the bench as you will see his soor puss
