Easter Road

I was just browsing the Easter Road entry on wikipedia.

I thought it was the first ground in the UK to have floodlighting, undersoil heating and to stage a European fixture. This isn't mentioned. Am I mistaken?

Re: Easter Road

The first ground to have undersoil heating in Scotland was Pittodrie Stadium
(and McDiarmid Park certainly had undersoil heating before Easter Road did)

I'm pretty sure The Ochilview was the first ground in Scotland to have floodligghts
(and Tynecastle certainly had floodlights before Easter Road did)

However, Easter Road Stadium was the first in the UK to stage a European match, when in 1955 it played host to the second leg of the European Cup First Round tie versus Rot Weiss Essen. (Hibs drew 1-1 after winning the first leg 4-0 in Germany).

Hibs staged a midweek friendly, in the mid 50's, against Man Utd?? to formally open their floodlights, the first in Scotland. Tynecastle did'nt get floodlights for at least 2 years after Hibs.

Coincidentally, Rot Weiss Essen were the first team in the then West Germany to have floodlights.

Pretty sure that's not true and ER was first in Scotland with undersoil heating.

That looks all right - Hibs played at Ochilview in the first game under the lights, Hibs weren't the first with floodlights.

Re: Easter Road

Scouring the internet - the first stadium in Scotland was Murrayfield
[Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]

There seems a split over undersoil in terms of clubs - I've found 5 websites claiming it was Aberdeen, 4 claiming it was Hibs, and 1 claiming it was St Johnstone (I think this may be meaning first undersoil heating installed at a stadium from construction, not fitted later).

Did we not also have the first electronic scoreboard in Scotland as well? Ok it was pish, when it worked the names came out mis-spelt and it was often illegible but it was there all the same.

McDairmid Park wasn't even built when Hibs first got undersoil heating installed and Pittodrie never had it either, pretty sure we were the 1st in Scotland to have it.

And yes first to have an electronic scoreboard ( as bad as it was ! )

Hibs played manchester city in the first floodlit match at ER in 1955, but ochilview had their lights installed earlier that same year .
Tynie did'nt get their lights installed until 1957.

Hibs played a game at Powderhall under a primitive floodlight system IN THE 19TH CENTURY !

Actually Murrayfield had undersoil heating long before any fitba stadium.

And THAT scoreboard, a Kenny Waugh purchase, designed by Mr Michael Mouse !

Then why did Scotland and England rugby teams train at ER when the Murrayfield pitch was frozen over and had had straw put over it to make it playable
