I meant the Holding Company (STF & RP) which owns 90% of Hibernian Football Club which, in turn, is paying a mortgage (£6.5 m - quoted by a poster) to the Holding Company.
I remain a positive skeptic, that said it looks as clear as an azure sky, as an unmuddied lake by comparison to the finances "way doon at Gorgie at Tynecastle Park".

No doubt about it these figures reinforce my view that Hibs/Hearts and to a lesser extent Aberdeen now absolutely dwarf the 'best of the rest' in the SPL.

and the SPL is now a three tier league.

Gone are the days when Dundee Utd/Kilmarnock even Dunfermline would compete with Hibs for players as Hibs can now take any player they want from the other SPL teams just as soon as he is out of contract and deemed good enough.

A mere 7 years ago Hibs turnover was £3.7m and now in 2006 it's £8.7m.

I'd stop short of giving Mr Petrie all the credit for this as a lot of the factors are demographic in a hugely buyant local economy, population growth and the continual expansion of satelite and cable TV money.

However Mr Petrie has turned around the ship that he himself ran aground so it would be churlish not to recognise that he has learned to delegate and has made the right managerial decisions at the right time

and Uncle Tom now has an profitable asset he can sell on at the right time and at the right price and hopefully to the right people as that day must be soon approaching.

I agree but you like me have speculated on that for a couple of years now?

Maybe STF enjoys his football too much these days..

I think Straiton Gate I was Uncle Tom's first foray into the jungle of football politics and his 'secret' merger proposals with Hearts which were no more than naive ramblings ridiculed politely in private of course

by 'The Pieman', Petrie,Cromb, O'Malley and all the other characters of the 1990's his second foray.

Straiton Gate II was a strange one though and it's hard to see the logic behind that 'adventure' and he categotically stated that there would be no Straiton Gate III and you have to completely believe him especially now as there is no point whatsoever.

Out of interest Sam, why do you always refer to Mowbray as 'Tony'?

Re: Hibs accounts now released?

Im pleased to see the debts go down, though I thought we might have made 1m profit apart from Garrys transfer fee. Hopefully now that its lower we will see at least 1m coming off each year with less interest payments.

Also the training ground isnt costing as much as I thought and hopefully pitches will be rented out to bring income in at various times.

The potential for revenue is small, certainly for the first few years. If I remember correctly, because the land needs a change of use (there is an application in with East Lothian planning beaks just now), there aren't going to be floodlights and it won't be allowed to be a commercial enterprise outside of being a training facility for Hibs. I'd presume that, in time, another application might be lodged to expand the use of the land.

Straiton Gate II was absolutely bonkers - planning to flit after two stands had been built. EXCEPT if you looked at it from a property developer's point of view, and I reckon for a time STF did look at ER that way.

Re: Hibs accounts now released?

Rod Petrie has dragged us back from the financial abyss he sanctioned and oversaw. That is good news for the Club.

However, the main plank of this financial success story is the appointment of Tony Mowbray. Whilst this appointment might have been inspired it might equallly have been the cheapest credible option at the time.

I am old enough to recall Mercer's appointment of MacDonald and Jardine which created the MITA team. The cheapest option, paid handsomely for Hearts. Mercer quickly changed from local property spiv to self proclaimed saviour.

Rod Petrie is not, thankfully, in the same league when it comes to publicising self. However, lucky appointments can make or break reputations and football clubs.

Re: Hibs accounts now released?

Yep TM has given us a team worth watching, but I would also credit the marketing department. The sales for strips have grown each year often due to newer classier designs. The behind the goals is a huge success, and heres hoping it gets duplicated in the future East stand. We have had as many as 3 shirt sponsors when considering trip to Ireland, inter toto, europe etc which raised more money. White and McKay kindly hired our away stand then decided not to actually use it. Even little things like being first to bring out the silly wrist bands before they became dated. Yep we have had some really good marketing to go with the team on the pitch.......though maybe not with the "retro" programmes

Re: Hibs accounts now released?

If we are paying interest only payments with a sum at the end, can we pay early? eg can we throw extra money at the actual debt to bring interest down? If not then potentially we are leaking a lot of money over a 20 year period

Probably not.

Banks like to get loadsa return on their loans via interest. That's why they are happy to cut deals which leaves the principle sum untouched, yet extend the period of the loan. They get a huge return albeit over a longer term.
If you (the borrower) want to pay off the principle (hence cutting interest payments) the bank then hits you with 'breakage costs' to enter a new deal. Particularly if you decide to 'take your debts elsewhere'. Basically the bank will make sure it still shafts you.

However................. it all depends upon who you have borrowed the money from, and whether they are happy to take in a bit less.

For the avoidance of doubt, anything stated in the above post is written without prejudice; is probably completely uninformed opinion, and possibly just a figment of my imagination. Readers should either ignore, treat with contempt, or simply accept the spirit it is written in, without recourse to huffy replies, legal action or threats of violence.
That includes YOU.
