On This Date In History
N-n-n-n-n-nineteen years ago: Saturday 29 August 1987, hertz 1-0 Hibs. And so the nightmare continued, hertz' 17th successive derby without defeat since their return to the top flight in 1983. As there had been no derbies during the previous four seasons due to one of the teams being in the First Division (Hibs one season, hertz three) this meant that our last victory over them had been on Weds 28.3.79. Jim Callaghan was Prime Minister and 'Bright Eyes' by Art Garfunkel was in the charts, sort of puts it in perspective.
David Duff had been installed as Hibs chairman the previous week and Neil Orr had been signed and made a scoring debut as the Doonhamers were 'dooned' and sent 'hame' on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat in the Skol Cup (Kano gettin both other goals, one a penalty). However, it was normal service as usual in the derby as a serious faux pas by Roughie after 7 mins allowed Robertson to put them a goal up. Strange to think that of that 17 game run this was the only fixture to feature that scoreline (the previous 16 matches featured eight draws and two 3-1 wins, one 3-2 win and five 2-1 wins for them). Also, it's sad to relate that this was Alan Rough's last derby and that he never played in a winning Hibs team in the fixture. Of course, Andy Goram's derby bow was seven weeks later when the hoodoo was broken! While both keepers played brilliantly for Hibs I can't say I feel any affection for them (unlike guys like Kano or Mickey Weir) as they've never given the impression that they felt anything for Hibernian FC, other than Easter Road was where they once were employed. Guys like Kano, Mickey Weir, Keith Wright, Sauzee etc proclaim their affinity with the Hibs support. AND THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE! Fourteen years ago today: Saturday 29 August 1992, St Johnstone 1-1 Hibs. A spirited Hibs performance was unlucky to collect the two points and it was a bitter sweet afternoon for a certain Thomas McIntyre. His header after about 52 minutes put us a goal up but then he was adjudged the have fouled in the box that plukey wee erse-cheek Paul Wright with about 20 minutes left and said human pizza scored from the resultant penalty. I always enjoyed trips to McDiarmid (I've never seen us lose there) and the pies were very nice! Eight years ago today: Saturday 29 August 1998: Hibs 4-2 Ayr Utd. Having been beaten by the might of Real Stranraer a fortnight previously before Stevie Crawford's late penalty knocked the SSBs out the league cup Hibbies must've been wondering which face the schizophrenic Hibs team would be wearing for this match. Sure enough, Hibs managed to create a few heart attacks; having been 2 up before the break Ayr were back on level terms before the hour mark. However, the two goal advantage was re-established before full-time. Cannae mind all the scorers but I'm sure Peter Guggi and Paul Holsgrove each got on the scoresheet. I think one of Ayr's goals, possibly their equaliser, was a penalty. |
