BBC Match Report

Hibernian 1-1 Aberdeen

Dean Shiels' equaliser ensured that Hibernian started the season with a share of the points with Aberdeen.
Shiels, Rob Jones and Scott Brown had all gone close for Hibs before the Dons took the lead against the run of play.

Former Scotland striker Stevie Crawford's shot on the turn deflected past goalkeeper Simon Brown.

Shiels fired in the equaliser off the underside of the bar, but neither side was able to add to their tally during a second half of chances for both.

Hibs had gone into the game without the injured Guillaume Beuzelin and Sam Morrow, while David Murphy, Ivan Sproule and Zibi Malkowski were are all suspended.

Steven Fletcher and Andrew McNeil were also absent on Scotland Under-19 duty.

Aberdeen were without banned duo Zander Diamond and Scott Severin.

Russell Anderson recovered from injury, but his defence were immediately under pressure, with Shiels flicking a header wide.

New Hibs signing Rob Jones also headed narrowly past the post.

Dons goalkeeper Jamie Langfield produced heroics at his near post to block Shiels' chance with his legs.

Scott Brown went close and Jones hooked an acrobatic overhead effort just past.

But Aberdeen took a shock lead in the 19th minute with their first effort on goal.

Richard Foster fed Crawford in the box and the Scotland international swivelled to turn and shoot past Simon Brown, with the aid of a deflection off Jones.

New Zealander Chris Killen should have levelled from eight yards in the 21st minute but for a fingertip save from Langfield.

Benjelloun's involvement came to an end after 27 minutes when he limped off to be replaced with Paul Dalglish.

Hibs got the goal their play deserved when Dalglish centred for Killen, who saw his shot blocked, but Irishman Shiels was on hand to drive a six-yard shot off the bar that the referee adjudged to have crossed the line.

Brown, who had hardly been tested, then produced heroics at his near post on 38 minutes to keep out Anderson's header from Barry Nicholson's free-kick.

Jones once again showed his menace in the air after 51 minutes, heading into Langfield's arms from former Aberdeen man Stephen Glass' corner.

The Dons almost netted when Jamie Smith fed Chris Clark and the midfielder's drilled 10-yard strike was palmed away by Brown.

Hibernian: Simon Brown, Whittaker, Hogg, Jones, Glass, Scott Brown, Stewart, Thomson, Shiels, Benjelloun, Killen.
Subs: Curtis, Konte, McDonald, Shields, Dalglish, Konde, Stevenson.

Aberdeen: Langfield, Hart, Anderson, Byrne, Touzani, Smith, Nicholson, Foster, Clark, Crawford, Lovell.
Subs: Soutar, Mackie, Dempsey, Stewart, Winter, Considine, Macauley.

Referee: S Dougal

No, never seen a game so far. Vowed not to renew season tickets when they totally refused to make any serious attempt to retain Riordan after losing O'Connor he has'nt been replaced which lessens any chance of me returning in the near future. Its a bit of a bastird that given me being a part timer over the last 46 years.

I despise the Hibs board with a passion and also despair at some of Hibs Mowbrays signings Brown Malkowski Killen, Konte, Konde Morrow only Murphy Sheilds to a degree and Jones show any promise. The thought that we are destined to see the likes of Marvin Andrews in a Hibs jersey fills me with disgust

So by you staying away thats helping the team??

Get along and support the guys instead of having a go at them. Every manager makes bad signings for fuck sake, as long as they try 110% for the Cabbage thats good enough for me.

Be realistic mate

I'm sorry to hear that. While it would have been great to have seen the board make a serious visible attempt to keep Riordan I think we all new that he had made his decision to move at wouldn't budge. He could have and should have handled his departure better (like GO'C) and for that I will always have contempt for him, whereas he should be remembered as a bit of a legend IMO.

If the products crap I'll stay away my prerogative I lost my green tinted spectacles years ago. and let me tell you I've endured some pish at ER over the past few years

Realistic about what ?? its pish in a nutshell,

"Every manager makes bad signings" brilliant so mediocrity is the order of the day, as long as the shite players give 110% thats OK dont make me fcukin laugh. Yer easily pleased.

Re: BBC Match Report

So, in the last 46 years this is the low point? Why not jack it in when we get relegated or when Duff Jimmy was signing hundreds of gash players a week? Or when Blobby is telling us to go to the cinema?

I know what you're saying about actions of the board being disappointing, but things have been a hell of a lot worse in the past.

Straw that broke the camel's back?
