Cost of Intertoto Loss

How badly does getting dumped out of the Intertoto club look now that both Drogheda United and Derry City were able to advance to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. In Derry's case they were able to knock out two time UEFA cup winners IFK Gothenburg, and Drogheda getting past HJK Helsinki with squads made of part time players by and large. And from reports back home they looked much better than the Yams did last night.

I don't know if it reflects on our board's lack of ambition that leads to us not going further in the Intertoto, in terms of getting us the players that TW needs to make it into the UEFA Cup or their desire to ensure that we are on sound financial footing. But the financial boost this will give both clubs will have a lasting effect for at least two more years.

Not sure, but it could be more to do with the clubs well in to their seasons doing better? I agree it looks bad though.

Re: Cost of Intertoto Loss

It certainly does look bad, knocked out of our chance to get into the UEFA cup, thought we could of won that one if we played our normal passing good football but we never, and now we have missed out on a bit of money aswell which isn't to good, and we still havn't signed anyone apart from Jones who i have to admit doesn't look a bad player so thums up for Mogga on that one, we could do with a few more signings though to improve in certain positions but cant see it happening as i dont think Mogga has as much money as he maybe wants.

Cantona is on the way to a first team debut
Re: Cost of Intertoto Loss

I found it embarrassing last Saturday and bitterly disappointing. We passed up a magic opportunity to get into a European competition. With the current squad we are not going to finish in the top 3 so the Toto is going to be our only chance for a good while[i wont even mention the Scottish Cup].

I dont know how upset Petrie will be. Now there is one less competition to worry about TM will be less likely to knock on his door and ask for cash.

Cant belive the board comments are coming out again because of this. The reason we are out is Mowbray and the team fecked it up good and proper. Played pish, tactics were all wrong and dont deserve to go through. No other reason.

I dont think TM is the dream manager i thought he was but what can he do when his best players get sold and he is not given any money to replace them. I have said it constantley that Hibs will never be successful under the current board. Rightly or wrongly they simply dont like spending money.

Re: Cost of Intertoto Loss

Financially the cost of not reaching the UEFA cup is as little as £50,000 from being getting knocked out by an Icelandic team in the next round and £1,500,000 for reaching the group stages where TV money from playing English,German or Italian teams kick in.

It's hard to play the blame game two games into the season but I can't see how the board can be blamed as they have financially balanced the books, authorised a small increase in the salary budget and have outlined decent funds for a few more players so we are told at least.

Long term the real loser might be 'Tony' as questions were raised in the football world when he turned down the Ipswich job and he did himself no favours by saying he ''could take or leave UEFA Cup football'.

These are very bad career signals to give out for someone who by his own admission only sees himself at Hibs for another 18 months.

Tony says he has been given some money. Maybe not as much as some want him to have but the bottom line is he hasnt signed anyone apart from Jones which he covered with the money he sold Deeks for. Maybe it has been too difficult in the close season to get a striker and not helped by Fletcher being with Scotland but I for one think that Morrow needs to break through soon or be moved on, the same with Konte if this recent surge of confidence fades again. Though TM did try to move Konte on and no one was interested. Boozy is another one who needs to be watched closely this season as we cant affford players who are contantly out injured (watch this space Killen)

Mowbray obviously still has money spare or he wouldnt even bother bringing in the trialists that he has. The reason there are no other signings is because Mogga hasnt signed them yet not that the money isnt there.

Re: Cost of Intertoto Loss

All down to bad tactics on the day i think. We could definately have thumped odense, but the team has no idea how to adapt when one of our tall strikers is subbed. Good for the pre-season warm up tho

One of the main reasons we changed to 'summer football' was to see if it would advance our teams in europe and to this it has been a reasonable success as up to that point our european form was piss poor apart from the odd exception.I would also have to say having watched our performances against odense that shelbourne would have beaten us as well what a nightmare that would have been.
